also if I try to do "as administrator" same "you might have not the right permission".
used TC for year..never had problem.
I have just reinstlled W7 , after 8 month. the last installation of the same OS TC didnt make any problem....settings are same.
can you help?
Ah! while trying to uninstall and reinstall it...COMODO firewall detected a random .bat file CDME939.bat trying to do something. should I block it?

No, that's the uninstaller deleting itself! EXE files can't do that, so I have to start a .bat file which deletes the INSTALL.EXE file when done. At the end, the .BAT file deletes itself.

Thanks! but what about the main topic of the error 5?
I can add that: I try to delete some file and TC get stuck. At that point Cancel button or other wont work.
I saw also COMODO firewall in the list of blocked intrusion have total commander...
I wonder why this is happening. my computer have the same configuration and software of the past system installation, and before I didnt have any problem.
IS THAT MAYBE THE PROBLEM CREATED BY THE FIRST INSTALLATION WAS DONE BY NINITE.COM?
update: I have just setup TC as secure application in COMODO. bu still have the same problem.
thanks.

Here is the Log COMODO Firewall - after I told comodo is secure app. still block cause TC access the following files:(sorry in italian but quite understandable.)

Error 5 means access denied. I guess that Comodo is blocking more in TC than just the uninstaller .bat file.

FWIW, I'm testing NIS 2013 beta and have just started to see the same behavior. Some installers will run, others get the error 5. Permissions on the files are identical.

One interesting tidbit: Let's take two .exe's, one that works (doesn't exhibit the problem) and one that doesn't work (exhibits the error 5 problem).

On a test system with NO security installed, start each program. When the UAC prompt is received, select NO.

For the .exe that doesn't exhibit the problem when run on a system with NIS installed, you get no message after selecting NO at the UAC prompt.

For the .exe that DOES exhibit the error 5 when run on a system with NIS installed, you get the error 5 - after selecting NO at the UAC prompt.

Could you try to launch the program via right click context menu?

Right click context menu = "unspecified error"

Sorry, sounds like you have to decide between Total Commander and Comodo.

Hi,I get this same error 5 problem. I'm on winxp SP3, 32bit, and with right-click it works fine. Seems no problem with permission.
Is there any chance to fix this? Or I'll have to use right-click always?

Error 5 means that Total Commander does not have the permission to access the file (using ShellExecuteEx).

Fix error 29

Post by *xls09 »

I also got issues with the weird error (29), only when opening Excel 2007/2010 files by pressing Enter or double clicking on them in TC. The error had nothing to do with the hard drive.

I found an easy fix: in Excel, go to File->Excel Options->Advanced->General and uncheck 'Ignore other applications that use DDE'.

This fixed the issue for me - hopefully it can help others.

Some installers are starting as normal programs and the first thing they do is start themselves again but with elevated privileges. And if that doesn't work, they'll simply end with no error - that's the group that "that doesn't exhibit the problem".
