strange oddities when launching office from TC or explorer

Post by *Nigurrath »

Hi all
this is the strangest thing I ever seen with TC..

context: windows 10 fall edition (latest) 64b with resolution of 2560x1440 and DPI 200% (as suggested by the system) + TC9.10 final release 32b

steps
1. press enter on any office file (xls, ppt or word)
2. the equivalent program launches without the dpi setting apparently, like in the attached images: the excel file is tiny in the upper top left side of the screen as if no dpi settings have been applied.. the rest is white surrounding.. the image isn't clear but what is not excel is white, filling the screen (2560x1440)
3. If I do the same thing from explorer everything goes fine

I also noticed some differencies among pdf launched within TC or from explorer_even the acrobat program icon is bit different (??)

I remember there were some settings telling to TC to use windows files associations or something else.. but don't remember which and if it's true..

Any idea?

found myself the issue, and IMHO a workaround should be found if possible.

The reason is because I have an high definition display which forced me to use DPI settings on Windows 10 equal to 200% (reccomended value by windows) to get everything readable.

For this reason I had this setting for TC: https://ibb.co/jYCA0m

this was of great help for the overal interface coherency and for the compatibility with the older plugins which were not made for windows 10 DPI scaling.. (e.g. image lister extensions)

Unfortunately, if I set this also all the other applications launched by TC inherit the same setting and as a matter of facts the office applications were launched with a DPI of 100%, with the result shown in my post above.

Wouldn't be possible to say that only TC run in this way and all the other programs launched (e.g. due to file association) are run with the native DPI scaling active?

I think that for high DPI displays TC, even latest one, still needs some tweaking ..

Thanks!

Have you tried using TC's DPI setting ("Configuration" -> "Options..." -> "Font" -> "Set dots per inch (DPI) to:" in stead of using the "Total Commander Properties" (https://ibb.co/jYCA0m)?

Please do not use these compatibility settings in TC - they are inherited to all processes started from Total Commander!

There should be no more need to use these with TC 9.10 because it should scale just fine to higher DPI screens. If you still encounter any scaling problems, then please report them here.

Hi,
I haven't used the DPI scaling option present into the settings because when I connect the laptop to an external monitor the fixed DPI setting creates problems and what was reasonably readable on the laptop becomes HUGE on the normal monitor :-)

I'll try to spot all the issues here, one is when you have different monitors. I saw that there are specific sections for specific resolutions in the ini file.. I think that they are meant for this situation, I'l try to monitor the situation and spot some eventually present issues.

thanks

Total Commander 9.10 now supports multiple screens with different DPI. There are some small problems which will be fixed in 9.10a, though.

which will be fixed in 9.10a,
Does it really need to be called 9.10a, I would prefer 9.11.

When you work with several versions of TC on the same PC, it is nice to be able to recognize the version of the TC files by their timestamp - that is not possible with 9.10a

This is OT - I made a poll: http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=48748
