Exception in TOTALCMD.EXE - Access violation

Post by *tmcdos »

I'm using Total Commander 6.54
Sometimes, when i move (using F6 key) folders from one drive to another, at the end of this process, Commander quits itself with the following error message:

Exception in TOTALCMD.EXE in 1A49D4. Access violation at 5A5C00, read of address 00000038

What is that ? The situation is not easily reproduced, since the next time I start Commander, return the folder on its original place and then try again to move it - everything is OK.

You need so specify more info about your system: which OS version, etc.

I can only suggest hardware failure here... Maxtor probably...

Or please check this:
Confiruration-Operation-Copy/delete what switches and settings do you have?
The problem might be in some RAM optimizer possibly installed.

The problem persists when I change disk drive

Post by *tmcdos »

I have 4 drives - each is 20 GB. Even when I change them, some times the problem arises.
And it is always on the same address.
Settings for Copy/Delete are:
Use big file copy mode,
Source + target on same disk - 10240 K
Source + target on different disks - 1024 K

Do not use compatibility mode

Are you using RAM optimizer or something?

Does any bug occur if you use explorer? (I would even ask you to use it for some time continuously just to investigate :))

The source of the bug can be a crack used  . Hope you've not used one, have you?

I do not use RAM optimizers

Post by *tmcdos »

No, I do not use such kind of software as RAM optimizers. I have enough RAM installed and prefer not to have too big swap file.
My Total Commander is not cracked - I'm using it with the nag screen (press 1,2,3).
But I'm not sure if it is not already crippled - since in the title bar is shown version 6.54a
Is it correct, or it should show 6.54 (without "a") ?

Does this happen when Total Commander is in the BACKGROUND when copying ends?

It does not matter whether in background or foreground

Post by *tmcdos »

It does not matter whether Total Commander is in background or in foreground. But as far as I can see, it is more likely to happen when in background.

Hope, you guys haven't misunderstood each other...
Can't understand clearly what do you mean: TC last in Z-order, or copying/moving in background.

I understood about the Z-order

Post by *tmcdos »

I thought you spoke about Z-order ... and this is what I mean when I said "background"

I ask because another user had exactly this problem (TC causing access violation when copying ends while another program is in front of TC), and a small fix which I sent him made the error go away. But in your case there seems to be a different problem...

Do you run any programs permanently in background which could be causing this error, e.g. a background virus scanner?

Oh, no - I do not have virus scanner at all

Post by *tmcdos »

I do not have virus scanner at all. It sounds curiously, but it is true. Usually I run Total Commander (which is the first program I start on my computer), 1by1 (a small MP3 player), Opera 8.53, Download Mage, Miranda and may be Skype.
There are other programs, but I run them more seldom.
These include MySQL server, Apache server, EditPad and may be Acrobat Viewer.
But the problem which I'm talking about appeared when only Total Commander, 1by1 and Opera were running.
May be this is in common with settings for big file copying between different physical drives ?

No, I often copy big files (DVB-S TV recordings) and never had a single crash. It must be something else.
