Well, this is a nice topic and I didn't know for it's existance until icfu did previous post.
I am just sorry that I missed some interesting parts at the beginning...
Here is the list:
EditPlus - vary fast, very customizable, have tabs.
Damn NFO Viewer
Everest - system information utility, currently the best
GIPO FIle Utilities - handle locked files, trace dir changes
FlashGet - the only which deserves to be payed except TC
Hyena - admin
InfoRapid Search&Replace
IsoBuster - doesn't use WIndows APIs to read optical media
RazorLame - lame mp3 front end
RegEditR - edit *.reg files like in registry
Resource Hacker
Starter - convinient for fast view, for more advanced exam. use AutoRuns
SysINternals Utils - Everything
UltraISO - read all virtual cd formats
WinRar
WinRescueXP - backup registry every x days.
The good thing about all those utils is that they don't need installation. This is small subset of my Utility toolset for which I created custom "do it in one click" installation. When I reinstall Windows i go to Utils folder and click "_install all.bat" which will install everything for 5 seconds. Then only hard integrated things like Office are installed. Also, it all works from CD. If you want complete list, with utilities for every need, I can send you silent installation scripts for those utils that need some registry/file tweaks in order to function correctly.

I tried metapad. It is a good efort considering it is 93.5 KB and freeware and fast almost as Notepad.it's been my editor of choice for a long while now.
But I realy don't know how it can be editor of choice for a long while, when it lucks several everyday functions - column selection, regular expressions and line numbers before all others.

Thanks for putting my attention to MetaPad - I think I will replace my NotepadEx with Metapad now.

For basic text editing functions, which is what I do most times, Metapad does quickly and efficiently precisely what it says on the box. Column selection, colour indenting, regular expressions and line numbers are quite unnecessary and irrelevant in this context. Other editors are available for this purpose. The shortcomings of Notepad are well-known which is why all the other 'Pads' exist. As to whether Notepad is faster or slower I neither know nor care because I don't buy a Lamborghini to go to the supermarket for a bag of potatoes. Of course, if you're giving one away free (Lambo, not Notepado), then I couldn't possibly refuse.

@ SQUIRE
Also I prefer having one application pleasing all my needs.
Your basic and mine basic are not the same basic. For basic text editing functions, which is what I do most times. Column selection, colour indenting, regular expressions and line numbers are quite unnecessary and irrelevant in this context

You need regular access to your desktop but windows are covering it?
Wipeout will temporarily move windows out of sight just by doubleclicking one or more screenborders. After an arbitrary window is focussed again, the original state is restored.
Tip:
Set the border element to 100% transparency if you don't like to see it.

@TealC:
You could try it out yourself but hey, I have enough free time, so here we go...:
1. Windows+D minimizes all windows, WipeOut keeps them visible
2. After you press Windows+D and do something on the desktop like starting a shortcut, the next Windows+D keypress is exactly useless, that means it does NOT restore the the previous state
3. Windows+D is an Explorer shell shortcut, WipeOut doesn't care about your shell
4. Windows+D is less responsive and slower, not a deal on fast computers but annoying on slow ones especially with dozens of windows open that have to be minimized and repainted
5. Not every keyboard is equipped with a windows key and not all people know about ways to reassign other keys to emulate the Windows key
6. Windows+D+Window+D are four actions, doubleclick+click (either in window or to click a shortcut) are only three incl. restore and if you have a mouse button assigned to double click you have only two
7. Find out yourself, the app is tiny, standalone and write to an ini file

My glass sphere is still defective, I still don't know what you are talking about.
