Folders on a DVD-Drive

Post by *Lanzelot »

Hello,

There's a strange behaviour in TC7 b4.
Maybe you know this one :

If you are on a DVD-Drive and you move the selection over some folders (by cursor up/down-key), then the cursor will flicker and move very slowly.
As soon as the cursor comes over FILE entries everthing is ok.

WinXP SP2

Go to options/display/icons and activate the radio button (o) All associated + EXE/LNK (slow)

Then try again.
Moving over folders is very slow compared to files.
I tested on Win2k SP4. Same behaviour.

In TC v6.55 it's okay.

Well there is something to it. Try this with an ordinary CD-ROM in a DVD drive:

1. Find a directory that ONLY has subdirectories in it, on the CD
2. Copy that directory to your harddisk
3. Scroll down the list on the Harddisk with the arrow down key - it is pretty smoth
4. Scroll the same way on the CD - a little jiggerish, but not easy to distinguish from the way it operates on the Harddisk.
5. Scroll to the last directory on the Harddisk and hold the arrow-down key pressed down - nothing to see.
6. Do the same on the CD - the cursor is flickering NOTICEABLY when the down key is continously pressed down over the last directory.

If you do the same on a FILE on the CD, there is no flickering.

Yes that's right, and you can see the difference even better if you take a cd/dvd with some folders AND files in same directory.

To see it very clearly go to options and activate "inverted cursor".
Then move the cursor to the first entry (first folder). Press and hold <csr down> key.
Now you can see: Cursor stays much longer on the folders than on files.
You can also see it flickering while wandering over the folder entries.
Files are ok.

Doesn't look and feel so good :?

I forgot to mention, that I have that activated.

I must admit that I mostly see it when pressing the down-arrow continously on a folder which is the last item in the directory.

I also have the inverted cursor activated, and no problems at all. :(

Does the drive have the CD icon in the drive button bar?

I could reproduce it now - on XP only! Apparently there is a bug in XP which causes this slowdown. I have already found a solution to avoid the slowdown (by caching the icons).

Indeed that's the normal redrawing flicker - but the icons are now cached and not re-requested every time...
