cm_CopyFullNamesToClip says "File not found!"

Post by *pjotrb »

Hi,

After working a while with TC 6.56, the cm_CopyFullNamesToClip and cm_CopyNamesToClip buttons in my toolbar sometimes will stop working. All they do from then on is show a dialog saying "File not found!". And the clipboard remains unchanged. Changing the selection or going to another dir does not help.

After exiting TC + restarting it, the buttons will work again (in the same dir, and with the exact same file or files selected).

The selected drive or path does not seem to matter: C:\, CD-Rom, external HD, USB-stick...

I am using TC6.56 in WinXP (SP2).
I believe this never happened in TC 6.55 and older. And I use these toolbar buttons a lot!

I did not test this in 7.0beta, mainly because I don't use 7 yet for daily work and other important stuff.

Bye,
Peter

Hello, pjotrb.

Whatever the reason may be why you experience the problems with the two internal T.C. commands cm_CopyFullNamesToClip and cm_CopyNamesToClip, I do not think that this is caused by the T.C. version 6.56 and T.C. 7.0pb4 as such.

I use T.C. 6.56 and T.C. 7.0pb4 and the two internal commands a lot, and they always work flawlessly for me.

Kind regards,
Karl

I would much prefer it if my problem was investigated instead of denied!

Thank you,

Hi, pjotrb.

Looks as if you misunderstood my message:

I did not deny your problem at all.

All I said was that I did not have a hint that it was introduced by T.C. 6.56 or later.
Excluding a possible source is a valid step in the process of diagnosing.
Indicating that not all users of T.C. 6.56 or higher are affected is a valid step of diagnosing as well.

Unfortunately I also never had this problem, and I use these buttons a lot too.

Does the selection disappear when you click the button and get this message?

No, the selection does not disappear.

My last reboot was 2 hours ago at work.
Now I am home.
During travel the laptop was in Suspend mode (not Hibernate) and then it was Resumed.

Here you can see the problem, at home, it just occurred again.

The two [ab.x] buttons are linked to the cm_CopyFullNamesToClip and cm_CopyNamesToClip functions.

I believe this was the first time after the reboot that I used one of these buttons.
After restarting TotalCmd the buttons are working fine again.

Could it be related to my Drive G: which is a DaemonTools-mounted ISO image from a network-share that I only have access to at work?

"File not found" usually means that TC couldn't load the file totalcmd.inc. This can happen for example when you have tried to create a link to totalcmd.exe somewhere, e.g. on the desktop or in the quick start area, but by mistake copied totalcmd.exe there. When you then click on this fake link, TC will start from that location and of course not find its files.

Solution: Delete all links to Totalcmd.exe, then run tcuninst.exe in the TC directory and click on "Repair". The links will be recreated in the start menu and on the desktop. You can then drag this desktop link to where you need it.

Hi,

I could not imagine any such bad links - and indeed, I found none.

This shows all the relevant files (searched the whole harddisk):
c:\Program Files\TotalCmd\TOTALCMD.EXE <- v6.56
c:\Program Files\TotalCmd\TOTALCMD.INC
c:\Program Files\TotalCmd_Beta\TOTALCMD.EXE <- v7beta4
c:\Program Files\TotalCmd_Beta\TOTALCMD.INC
c:\Documents and Settings\[...]\Desktop\Total Commander.lnk
c:\Documents and Settings\[...]\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Total Commander.lnk
c:\Documents and Settings\[...]\Start Menu\Programs\Total Commander\Total Commander 32.lnk

The 3 .lnk files all point to v6.56.

So if the problem is TOTALCMD.INC-related, then the cause is different; or else it is not TOTALCMD.INC-related.

Bye,
Peter

Also, it might be a good idea to enhance all messages by showing which file can not be found, and perhaps even the method being executed or the action being performed.

Sorry, I don't have any other explanations. All you can do now is to start Filemon from www.sysinternals.com the next time you get the error, and check what file cannot be found...
