New Milk's Pack of Total Commander

Post by *Milk »

After 3 months of development, I've been created my own pack of Total Commander. It includes color schemes, all neccecery plugins for regular user, English and russian interface, etc. Based on TC 7.02. Check it out! :):)

Your pack is illegal because of including WinRAR licence key.

ARJ is a registered version too.
I think the wipe archiver plugin is a bit risky though, I often use alt-F5, Enter, assuming it is still set to zipping.

It looks nice though

A few screenshots and perhaps even a walkthrough would be nice, especially as most of the docs are in Russian. Also, it seems that your pack is based on another pack, which you failed to mention.

General impression: nice. I do like ease of changing it's look. There's still a lot to do though.

My suggestions:
- Do you really need 2 copies of AkelPad / TotalSet / Tweak TC?
- The pack looks very bad under 800x600. The buttonbar is too long.
- The view menu is too long even for 1024x768. It really should be split.
- What is 7z.exe for? Plugin works just as well...
- Directory Hotlist. "My DocumentS". The big S is a mistake? It suggests that "s" is a hotkey.
- I feel that packs would do better keeping the "start" menu empty. It's meant for user commands, pack creator can easily move his commands to separate menu branch.
- "7zip separate pack". I think that it shouldn't appear when user doesn't have zip installed. You should check it during installation and either choose a correct buttonbar or generate it at runtime. The second approach would allow you to handle also installations in directories other than "%ProgramFiles%\7-Zip".

Keep up good work.

I'll Try to add screenshots :)
My pack IS NOT BASED on eXtended pack, I tried to unify usage of
profiles, 'cauze it is not realized in native TC, unfortunately :(
The same is about color schemes

2 copies - I can not modify .ini files of eXtended pack pfofile - so I 've to place those files in another dirs
The pack looks very bad under 800x600. The buttonbar is too long. - Who use 800*600???? I do not try make universal pack for all cases. This pack is not oriented for users who uses 800*600 screen res.
The button bar is not too long - I tried to realize 1 click access to neccecery stuff. It's very convinient to drop all your programs to specified
bar menus and run it via this buttonbar.
What is 7z.exe for? For making it more popular :)
Plugin works just as well... - yes, but still you can not run it in separate window - thats sux, cause freq. packing is not good via TC :(
Directory Hotlist. "My DocumentS". - WILL FIX :) Thanks
>I feel that packs would do better keeping the "start" menu empty.
I don't think so. Sometimes for getting access to some windows items and
programs i use explorer - how can I do that via TC default intallation?

"7zip separate pack". - thanks, gotta fix my nsis script :)

So , and what about it in GENERAL? How was it for you? Good? Bad?

You can modify your settings or place a shortcut in one of this directories.

Is 5 years too much for a monitor? Especially if it works well..
My brother still uses 17'' CRT monitor that has only 75hz with 1024x768. And when I use it, I switch to 800x600.

Good reason, I missed it. Maybe I'll switch to it...

With external commands you can move these things somewhere else - i.e. to "Milks" menu branch.
Milk wrote:So , and what about it in GENERAL? How was it for you? Good? Bad?
"Nice". Up to now, there are only 2 packs I consider good. "TC Power Pack [The one created by BuKoX] and XP". They are well integrated, easy to use, rather bug free. Each has a purpose and serves it well.
Why isn't yours the 3rd one? Mainly because of the things I wrote before.

What is original in your pack?
- Multiple colors and schemes are nice to play with, but not really useful, nobody needs a separate pack for it, TCThemes + Impomezia TC Color Presets are enough.
- Quick access bars. They are good.
- Anything more? Maybe some very minor things.

Integration? Rather loose.
Internal organization? Bad. Tools+Utils...
Cramped main directory...very common problem.
Rather big size for what it does.
A lot of things that are [or seem to be] unnecessary. pluginst.inf in several plugin folders, Colors directory, TC's uninstaller to name a few [You have to ask Ghisler to remove TC's files, but he usually agrees].
Descriptions - it's good that you have them, but it looks like you just copied them from XP and didn't care any more.
Unreferenced things like winamp controller or most scripts.
All these things are very minor, but significantly affect how do I feel about your pack.

PS: I didn't check, but I guess you have another path-related bug. The shortcuts in the main directory.
And you could also check if there's winamp / Office installed.
Tegnoversigt doesn't seem to be the best comment for charmap.

Thanks! Erased
> About 800*600
when I asked: Who Use this resolution, i ment the percentage of
users who use it.
>Integration? Rather loose.
>Internal organization? Bad. Tools+Utils...
Integration - will fix it, thanks! :)
Internal organization - that's not main thing
>Rather big size for what it does.
Do you care about 10MB? Most of the users got HDDs more than 100 gb. And they realy do not care in 5mb, 10 Mb or 30 Mb...
>Descriptions
I thought and decided to delete it :) Such users as we are - do not need them, 'cause we know what all things are, but for users I think they do not need it at all.
>Unreferenced things like winamp controller
Agree. Deleted.

Thank you very much for critics! :)

I don't know if the pack contains the tool SetFolderDate.exe, but if it does then 7x.exe is needed for using the tool with archives.

Why is this argument so popular?
It's correct for 95% users.
5% uses it [at least sometimes] on media with highly limited capacity. Like pendrives or network shares. Or cell phones, which, thanks to bluetooth, act as pendrives. Even on them 19.7 MB is usually not much...but when sb. wants to have a full featured toolset, these little megabytes sum up.

McAfee VirusScan reports that TSet.exe (in the package) is a Trojan.
