Ultra Edit and Total Commander

Post by *aleksazr »

Are you using TC to select a file to edit with UE?

Maybe you should visit here

Hi

thanks for the tool. Have you tested it in combination with "Open File TC"?
http://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/OpenFileTC.html
Any experience or hints?

how about Choice Editor
http://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/ChoiceEditor.html
:)
or edit wincmd.ini (you can set it in tc options too) and set the editor to what ever you want
Editor=<path to your editor>
btw I find npp better then ue as it's smaller, faster and free :)

Doesn't seem to work with ChoiceEditor and UE version 10.10. (No interest in updating to newer UE versions because they are too fat, bloated and slow!)

But nevertheless you misunderstood the posting (or the tool): it is not created to select between different editors or to discuss the usage of different software. It was made to load fast UltraEdit.

My question indented the usage of the tool instead of UE in the definitions of "Open File TC"

No, I wasn't even aware of such utilities.

If I'm getting it correctly, OpenFileTC lets you choose
which editor is run depending on filetype selected for editing...

If so, I don't see a reason why you couldn't select ueFastStart.exe
for editing some of the files with OpenFileTC.

I substitututed ueFastStart for UEdit32 in ChoiceEditor.ini, but it did nothing, ie, I would have expected it to launch UEdit, but absolutely nothing happened.

So I know ChoiceEditor is dead, but I use it, and it works for me. If I go to Win7, I know I'll have to change...

First quick-test (replacing the path in Open File TC.ini) seem to be OK. Waiting for other comments of other users ...

Choice Editor should work in 7 just install it in a folder where you have write permissions (somewhere in \Documents\<You>
I tested ue 17.3 (just dll it) and it works with Choice Editor, as well as replacing the default editor in wincmd.ini

Code: Select all

Editor=%programfiles%\IDM Computer Solutions\UltraEdit\Uedit32.exe
btw it's slow as hell
you can't use ueFastStart cos tc needs to pass the file to be opened to the editor not the editor launcher, write in us's forums for an updated ueFastStart one that would pass the file list (or name) to ue, but just give n++ a try there is even a hex plugin on sf.net (search nodepad++ plugins)

ps.
did I read this right
Quick open a file in running instance of UE with Total Commander
this tool can be used only if ultra edit is running?
passing a file name to uedit32.exe opens it in the same ue window I don't get the point of this tool.
ueFastStart won't work in Choice Editor or as a default editor in wincmd.ini cos it needs a running instance of uedit32

First, check if you have registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Uedit32.exe

if you don't have it, get it from here, add it to registry and change both paths if need be.

See if it works now.

Which version do you have? I don't know which version of UE started creating that key.
BTW, if its too old, you may see little speed improvement...

As Peter wrote, it works for him.
He uses different plug-in, but that shouldn't matter.

TC passes the file (not files, one file only) to editor launcher (ueFastStart.exe)
and the editor launcher passes the file to the actual editor, UE.

No, it can be used whether UE is running or not.
But there will be no speed improvement if UE is not already running.

You called it - no App Path in my registry - will try it later today.

Thanks.

(UE ver is 10.10, so yes, I understand not much speed improvement is expected - that's why I've stuck with 10.10!)

Yes, I remember when I was on version 8, I think.
You press F4 and UE is started in no time.

But I bought a new computer and installed all the latest software. :D
And yes, UE starts awfully slow, thats why I wrote this tool.

Now I have the speed of the previous versions with capabilities of the current one. :D

Added App Path (modified to my location), and UeFastStart works fine with ChoiceEditor now. Not much difference in speed with 10.10, but that's understood.

May have to update my copy of UltraEdit some day...

Thanks.
