|
|
As advises by Total Commander's author, I'm placing this request here.
I would like to a file system pluging supporting Media Transfer Protocol (also called MTP or PlaysForSure).
This is a transfer protocol designed by Microsoft, basically for copying music to portable mp3 players. This protocol is automatically added to Windows when you install Microsoft's Windows Media Player 10.
Devices supporting this protocol show up in 'My Computer' like other USB storage devices but won't show in Total Commander.
Here you can find the specification and some information: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnwmt/html/mtp_spec.asp
and here a development kit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7976db5d-afa4-4dff-83bd-3f83635d2d5b&displaylang=en |

I support this request 100%.
If I were a programmer, I'd've already tried to do something about that - but I'm not. Maybe it's not feasible, seeing this request dates from more than 2 years ago? |

Yes, such a plugin would be nice. Unfortunately I don't have any device which uses this protocol, all my players and those of my relatives show up as drive letters. Can anyone recommend a cheap player using this protocol? I don't want to spend many hundreds of bucks just for test purposes... _________________ Author of Total Commander

The Creative Zen V and V Plus lines does. That's the reason I stopped looking at them. However, a plugin might change that... _________________ Best regards,

One thought - my Sandisk sansa m250 also shows up as a drive letter by default, but it has MTP capabilities too. Might be worth a check, Christian! _________________ Best regards,

Hello Christian and all,
At the "anythingbutipod" forum theres an interesting thread about MTP vs UMS:
http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=495
The MS guy says it's already being used in cameras and phones, and will be standardized just like UMS. So it might be quite useful in the future.
And, btw, I just bought a Samsung YP-U3 with 4GB for about 120 Euros, I think there are smaller versions, too. It uses MTP and its stupid software was the reason I started looking for a TC plugin

My one concern - will it be possible to use such a TC plugin to store other things than media? I regularly use my MSC/UMS player to transport data files, such as zipped backups..... _________________ Best regards,

Hmm... as far as I can tell, it's up to the device's manufacturer what you can do with it. MTP itself doesn't seem to put a restriction on filetypes, but if the manufacturer wants his device to only work with media files, then he can put that down somewhere - maybe in the firmware? My player only allows Media files in the "Media" directory but it does allow any kind of file in the "Data" folder. Funny thing now is, I can get these files on the player with explorer/TC, but I can't get them off again! (Again, I guess its the Samsung implementation of MTP on this device that's to blame here) |

Nope, welcome to the wonderful world of DRM.

The problem these days is that it's getting increasingly hard to get a player which supports anything else than MTP - i.e. Creative Zen V Plus doesn't. That's why this plugin would be a nice thing, provided that I could use it to store data files as well. Without that, I wouldn't have a use for it - I can get media files onto the player in many other ways. _________________ Best regards,

Thanks for all the useful input! I was already considering the Sansa players, but didn't know that they support both the drive mode and the MTP mode. Is this true for all Sansa models? It's difficult to find any information online, the manufacturers usually do not list how the player is accessed. _________________ Author of Total Commander

It is described in the users' manuals. For instance for the Sansa e200 -> click "User Guides" and there you can find the appropriate manuals.

Hi folks!
I have an MTP capable audio player as well as significant Windows based C++ programming experience. I have never created Total Commander plugins before though.
However, I'm letting everyone know that I'll take a whack at creating this plugin - because I need it myself
Sincerely,
Ivan Stojic |

I now have a Sansa for testing - my brother needed a player, so it's a good occasion to buy one. So we may see a plugin soon from myself or user ivanstojic! _________________ Author of Total Commander
