Cannot rename a folder sometimes..

Post by *sheppaul »

I couldn't figure out an exact condition for the problem which is not possible to rename a folder sometimes.

General tasks are like the following while the problem is frequently occurring:
- Search files in Everything program
- Open (a searched folder) to Total Commander's TAB
- Use Multi-Rename Tool to rename multiple folders
- QuickSearch Extended plugins are being used

When I try renaming a folder, it is impossible to do so until TCMD is restarted. Once TCMD is relaunched, folder renaming is working again for some time. Then suddenly the problem occurs again. -> should quit TCMD :(

I'm using Totalcmd64.exe 8.51a in win 8.1 x64. What can be a problem?

ps. TCMD seems not close a file handle for some reason but I can't figure out. Obviously, I confirmed it in Process Explorer.

There are various possibilities where a folder is locked.
Usually I had those:
- the folder content is shown in one panel while you want to delete it at the other panel
- a file of this folder is still used by another program or even a TC plugin
- you entered this folder with TC and did some actions before changing to another one, but your virus scanner is still scanning it.
- sometimes it is still the active working folder of a program for this drive

You can use LockHunter to find out which program is locking the folder:
http://lockhunter.com/

Just right click on the folder and choose "What is locking...".

Thanks!

I've just found what's locking the folder.
It is QuickSearch Extended plugin.

BTW, I have no idea what's happening with the plugin as there was no problem previously. This is rather occurring with the recent version of TCMD update.

I found one more weird thing.

Sometimes, the folder to rename is temporarily read only mode for some reason in TCMD until TCMD is restarted (tcmatch.exe was inactive. I've disabled it). In that reason, folder rename function does not work.

There is a pop-up message box like "Remove write-protect". Certainly the folder is not read only mode.

I have no idea how the folder to rename can be read-only mode temporarily. Once tcmd is restarted, it's possible to rename the folder.

I seems to find a reason why tcmd oftenly deny to delete a folder after moving it to other drive.

AlwaysCopyInBackground=2
This option seems to cause a trouble with QuickSearch Extended plugin or tcmd itself.
Only using TCMD x64. :)

Does it work fine when you use internal quick search combined with
AlwaysCopyInBackground=2 ?

Nope, I don't think so.
I completely disabled quicksearch plugin but it didn't work well with internal quick serach too.

To figure out the problem I had to sweep out the 10 years setup of tcmd I'd been using. :cry: Oh! my TCMD!!! I didn't know that I'm a kind of hardcore nerd of tcmd until the whole settings are destroyed.

I seems to find a bug with relation to the action triggered by the multiple opening of a same folder using tabs called from everything. I guess it's a bug during tab operations but couldn't figure it out completely.

TC itself causes a folder lock problem frequently to make it impossible to delete/rename/move the folder. The folder is actually moved but not deleted when finished to move the folder contents.

I'll make steps to reproduce the problem if possible.
