TC9 beta installation (side-by-side with current version) ?

Post by *Axxy »

I just downloaded the 32/64bit version and was wondering about how tc9 beta installs.

I don't want to update over my existing installation, so can I install to a separate location that doesn't interfere with my current installation of tc8?

You can chose an different install folder,
but on default the one and same INI will be used (on default, depend on your settings).

To solve this, follow this step:

After installation (before starting TC),
go to that new folder and

- Create a text file "WINCMD.INI"

- Open "...\your new folder\WINCMD.INI" and write:
[Configuration]
UseIniInProgramDir=7

- Close and save "WINCMD.INI"

- Launch TOTALCMD.EXE with now fresh and separate INI file, located in folder with TOTALCMD.EXE.

TIP: see running TCs Help menu >> "About TC" for location of current lNIs

------------------------------------------------------

TIP: Total Commander is fully portable (but some plugins maybe)

How-to run TC portable, without installation, without tracks on your PC?

- Download *.exe from http://www.ghisler.com/900_b1.php
(tc900x32_b1.exe or tc900x64_b1.exe or tc900x32_64_b1.exe)

- Rename tc900x32_b1.exe to tc900x32_b1.zip
- Extract tc900x32_b1.zip (e.g. with Alt+F9 / WinZip / WinRar / Uniextract /...)
(Note: inside TC you can also use Strg+PageDown key to open the archive)

- Go into tc900x32_b1\ folder
- Extract INSTALL.CAB (e.g. with Alt+F9 / WinZip / WinRar / Uniextract /...)
(Note: inside TC you can also use Strg+PageDown key to open the archive)

- Go into INSTALL\ folder
- Create a text file "WINCMD.INI"
- Open "...\INSTALL\WINCMD.INI" and write:
[Configuration]
UseIniInProgramDir=7

- Close and save "WINCMD.INI"

- Launch TOTALCMD.EXE with fresh and separate INI file, located in folder with TOTALCMD.EXE.

TIP: see running TCs Help menu >> "About TC" for location of current lNIs

--------------------------------------------------------------

TIP: To protect yourself from modifying important files,

use the "Configuration > Ignore List" feature.

Add content like:
F:\*
G:\*
H:\*

Search help for "Ignore", chose "Dialog box: Configuration: Ignore list"

Ignore (don't show) the following files and folders:
-- Full path to file. Example: c:\config.sys
-- Path relative to the root of ALL drives. Example: \RECYCLER
-- Name which will be hidden in all paths. Example: descript.ion
--------------------------------------------------------------

Next search the forum for TCs 'Pseudo environment variables' like "%Commander_Path%" to use relative paths in TC.

------------------------------------------------------------

To clean-up, just delete the downloaded *.exe and also the tc900x32_b1\ folder.

------------------------------------------------------------

More INI parameter to customize your TC:

Code: Select all

[Configuration]
UseIniInProgramDir=7 ;7=nimm diese INI im TC-Programmordner
InplaceRenamePath=1 ;1=Pfad wechseln per Klick auf parent in der Pfadzeile
SpaceMovesDown=1 ;1=Auswahl per SPACE-Taste, dann springe eine Datei weiter nach unten
DirBrackets=0        ;0=no [..] around directory names
MinimizeOnClose=3    ;1=X-Button; 2=A-F4; 3=both; hold Shift to force close.(03.11.10 Added)
Viewer=TOOLs\Viewer\Viewer.exe
Editor=%Commander_Path%\TOOLs\NotePad2\notepad2.exe "%1"
CompareTool=%Commander_Path%\TOOLs\WinMerge\WinMergePortable.exe
pluginbasedir=%Commander_Path%\plugins

Extra tip: TC menu with more entries

try "Extended English Menus for Total Commander by petermad"

A alternative menu file which provides all the TC commands, and some more too.
