TC 9 slow start

Post by *Ennovy »

Can anyone confirm this:

If I start TC8 the GUI is visible within half a second. If I start TC9 however it takes approximately 5 seconds.
I use almost the same configuration and plugins (DirSizeCalc and Ulister)
I wonder if I can do something about this.

This is definitely not normal - maybe it's reloading the button bar and cannot save it or similar. You can use the tool "process monitor" (NOT "process explorer") from www.sysinternals.com to see exactly what is happening when TC is starting.

That's a bit to complicated for me. I managed to filter the TC records, but there remain hundreds and a lot I don't understand.

What I did find out is that when I start TC9 in a sandboxed (isolated) environment it starts really fast.

EDIT: Also when I start TC9 with admin rights it starts fast.

Just disable the antivirus temporarily to check ...

Did you tested fresh portable install without custom column and tabs pointing only on local hard-drive...

What i have seen is that TC9 is slower with filesystem plugins and much slower with VirtualPanel...

Perform a search on the filtered ProcMon list for 'not found' and 'Denied'

Maybe that points you into the right direction.

Did a fresh install of the portable version in new directories, without any plugins. The 64 bit version started very slow,
BUT the 32 bit version started very fast.

I keep testing the 32 bit version. Thanks.

This weekend I will test this procedure. I want to know what slows down the startup of the 64 bit version on my machine. Thanks for the hint!

hi!
i'm using process monitor but it is not showing total commander process' activity at all (i filter with process name contains totalcmd, tried without any filters too). but when i use 64 bit exe, it is shown. the thing is, big part of plugins i use are 32 bit versions only

Maybe you are running totalcmd.exe with administrator rights?

I noticed the slowness in start up as well. It was not fast in TC8.5x, but appears to be worsened in TC9.0bx. When I start TC9.0b6 with a folder of 4000+ files, it could take up to 30s to list all the files in that panel. Comparatively, Windows Explorer always takes only 1s or 2.

So it starts quickly, but then does something until you can actually use it?

Not sure what it does, the circle keeps spinning.

It could be reloading the icons in the button bar. Can you temporarily disable the button bars for test purposes via Configuration - Options - Layout?

Tried that and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Will observe more to see if it's due to other factors.
