[BUG]TC9 can not open .tar.gz file without file extention.

Post by *Maxis »

TC9 can not open .tar.gz file without file extention. It Only works when file extention .tar.gz is given. x86 and x64 under win 10.

But 8.52a does not have this problem. Please check it.

Who has archives without file extensions in Windows ?
Ctrl-Page-Down works fine to open archives without extension.
So there is no problem

Of course you can't
We are on Windows and there is no association for files without extensions.
Not in Windows and not in TC.
And for shure there never was such an association in Windows or TC !
It would be useless as everyone understands.

Hi, Maxis.

I have just created a tar.gz file using Total Commander itself.
Name: tempi.tar.gz
Copied it as tempi only.

Total Commander 8.52a and Total Commander 9.0 both open the .tar.gz file named tempi.tar.gz by double-click or pressing enter on its name.
Total Commander 8.52a opens the copy tempi, too, by double-click or pressing enter on its name.
Total Commander 9.0 does not do so.

---similar example, slightly different result---
I have copied the .tar.bz2 file firefox-45.5.0esr.x86.tar.bz2 as firefox-45.5.0esr.x86
Now guess what happens.
Total Commander 8.52a and Total Commander 9.0 both open the .tar.bz2 file named firefox-45.5.0esr.x86.tar.bz2 by double-click or pressing enter on its name.
Neither Total Commander 8.52a, nor Total Commander 9.0 open the copy firefox-45.5.0esr.x86 by double-click or pressing enter on its name.

---raises the question---
Should we really expect Total Commander to open any archive by double-click or pressing enter on its name, even in case the (double) extension is missing?

Cheers,
Karl

Hi, Carl,

As you said, 8.52a works but 9.0 not. So I think it may be a bug. If Mr. Ghisler don't think so, I will stick to 8.52a.

Thanks for your test!

Hi, Maxis.

You have ignored the second test, .tar.bz2. archive, where T.C. 8.52a and TC. 9.0 both agree not to open the archive file on double-click or enter key in case the .tar.bz2 extension is missing from the file name.

Hi, Carl,

As I mentioned in my first post, all I report is TC9 can not handle .tar.gz archive without file extention but old version works.

These are supported archives listed in TC 9 feature:
ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, UC2, TAR, GZ, CAB, ACE archive handling

Thanks again!

opening 7zip archives without .7z extension fails too

Post by *karlchen »

Hi, Maxis.

T.C. 9.0 does handle .gz., .tar.gz and .tgz correctly, provided the expected filename extensions are present.

By the way. The .tar.gz scenario can be seen as well on 7zip archives. T.C. 9.0 will not open a 7zip archive (double-click, enter key) in case the extension .7z is missing. T.C. 8.52a, however, will.
The same applies to CAB archives. T.C. 9.0 will not open a CAB archive (double-click, enter key) in case the extension .cab is missing. T.C. 8.52a, however, will.

ZIP archives (extension missing), in contrast, will be opened on double-click / enter key by T.C. 9.0 and T.C. 8.52a.
RAR archives (extension missing), too, will be opened on double-click / enter key by T.C. 9.0 and T.C. 8.52a.

Depending on what the designed and promised behaviour is for archive files missing the proper filename extension, Christian might want to check, not only for .tar.gz and .7z.

Cheers,
Karl

Thanks for your report. This problem seems to only affect files with no extension at all. I will check why this is happening, it's definitely not intentional. Sometimes a bugfix can have such negative efects.

I don't see it as a problem if files with no extension are not opened
automatically in a Windows system.
There are extensions to show what file it is and I can make associations.
Opening unknown file types is nothing I expect from a Windows file manager,
even it may be detected as archives by looking inside.
