[Request] Did you find sorting folders by type is good idea?

Post by *VnMnL »

Hi all!
I think sorting folders by type isn't good idea.

If you don’t understand what I mean I'll try to describe...
Use option which sorting folders like files.
Then create empty folder and create inside two folders... for example:

Code: Select all

..
some_stuff
program_v2.1
Sorting like files - by extension... but is this right? Folders haven't any types... it's just folders...
Yes I can disable option which sorting folders like files but than I can't sort dirs by date or size...

I hope we will see in next versions of TC new option or config variable which solve this problem....

Thanks...

People may want to use extensions in folders to sort them by specific categories, so why not sort by them?

Workaround: don't use dot (.) in the folder name when you don't mean it for extension, you could maybe name it 'program_v2_1' in your example.

Yes but I think not so many people use ext. in dir. names...
Anyway... maybe you can add one config variable... something like "SortDirsByExt=[1|0]" [1 by default]?

2szlori: Thanks for idea but this is not so convenient way (e.g.: What about CDs/DVDs etc?)

Yes, I support the idea about "SortDirsByExt=[1|0]"! Sorting folder by extensoins disturbs very often, but I want to sort them by size and date.

Support, too. I regularly use dots in folders but only to show version numbers, not extension of contained file types. "music from the 80s.mp3" as a folder name really looks like a filename to me, I would never use such a naming scheme for a folder.
Added to that I hate using underscores or other alternatives instead of dots.

A"fake" dot…

Post by *Clo »

:) Hi Jeff !
music from the 80s.mp3
- What about something like :

music from the 80s·mp3 ?
- The character #183 is an "inactive" dot, just placed a bit higher on the line… Needs only to use a font which has all characters (Arial, Tahoma or so)
• I tested for a dir like A·1 : no problem, Win$ sees it as a dir alright…

Well, like I said, I have no use for workarounds here because I don't use naming schemes like "music from the 80s.mp3". I don't put extensions in folder names in general, only version numbers.

Replacing dots with · is no alternative for me, it just looks rather strange:
Opera 8·0 Technical Preview 5·1
instead of
Opera 8.0 Technical Preview 5.1

Don't you think so? ;)

Furthermore the font thing is not acceptable anyway, I won't rename folders and limit me from using the fonts I like.

It's my way---

- It's a good trick for me, and not so strange…
- I would prefer that rather to see my dirs (if dot{s} needed ) treated as files by the damn Window$…
- And there are more fonts which contain all characters than ones which do not, the choice is large…
Indeed, it's only my way ;)

This is a TC "feature" only, Explorer doesn't have an extension column by default. Furthermore it's not even consistent behaviour. Although TC sorts folders by extension it doesn't show the extension in the extension column like xplorer2 file manager does for example.
Even when using a 3rd-party extension the folders are not affected when sorting:

So, that feature is really only useful for people that use folder names to describe the contained file types and I doubt that much ppl are doing that. At least the majority of the users have no use for that sorting "feature" so it should be possible to turn it off.

Clo: As I said before replacing dots with something like "_", "•" or even more "exotic" symbols won't fully solve this sorting problem. For example FTP with limited rights, locked archives which cannot be modified… Eventually remember numerous plugins which use files/folders-like displaying method e.g.: Diskdir, Registry etc…
I think anyone who have the same sorting problem like me won't use this solution because it's not really convenient. We just hope Mr. Ghisler will make little implementation.

Thanks for understanding

Just bumping...

2 Christian
What about the suggestion about the SortDirsByExt key? Is there any chance for impelemting it in v7.0? The feature is very needed...

Yeah, folders like B.B.King or Z.Z.Top should finally be sorted correct among those without a dot.
