Am I wrong or tired and that's why can't see?
I can't find anything in Help and Tutorial about Auto-rename option during copying.
I think bhsvendbo would like some additional options during autorenaming. There were already such questions at the forum but unfortunately it's not possible.

Hello !
- I got that bhsvendbo meant, I guess; there are some variables in the <wincmd.ini> file to configure the feature.
- But, of course, this is not very handy, and options directly reachable from a local menu or so would be better.

Are you sure? So could you (or anybody else) help me to find them? Is it documented anywhere?Clo wrote:there are some variables in the <wincmd.ini> file to configure the feature.
There is----

It's limited, but there is :
- Missing still, "3" : selects the extension only, because I experienced that often I need to change the extension only, hence the actual choices are not appropriate.
{ Apart : you might use the Tutorial to search these entries, since it has an alpha table for this huge "Configuration" section. If you don't find @ "I" for “Inplace…”, just look at "R" for “Rename…”, and the trick is played - Someone to translate the Tutorial in Polish ? }

It's limited, but there is :
Code: Select all
[Configuration]
RenameSelOnlyName=1/0
"1" : Selects only the name in the inplace-rename field.
"0" : Selects the name and the extension.

It's "documented" in help, chapter 1b., "New...in TC 6.0"

I didn't search the forum for similar questions (djk has mentioned), I guess, you would find some explanations and workarounds there like these ones:
* AutoRename adds a "(n)" suffix to the filename. You can't change this pattern in advance.
* As a workaround, you can add a fixed string to the extension in the "target" textbox of the copy dialog; for example:
Copy x file(s) to
C:\mydir\*.*_copy
Drawback: Not existing files will get the extended extension too
Then you can use the MultiRenameTool to define the filenames as actually wanted.
BTW:
Copy / Rename:
C:\mydir\*_copy.* => Doesn't work at all
C:\mydir\copy_*.* => Destroys (overwrites) the first 5 chars (=length of "copy_") of filename
C:\mydir\*.copy_* => Destroys (overwrites) the first 5 chars (=length of "copy_") of extension
Is this a bug or is it by design?

Look for the small question mark sign, and select it.

As we talked about it outside of the forum, your suggestion is not exactly what we want.

Yes, of course, it's mentioned that it was added (and I know it ) but it's not described how to use it anywhere. It should be in Help 3.d - File Opertions -> F5 Copy

Sorry, but you are talking about something else.
We are talking about autorenaming and you about multirenaming.
Autorenaming is used while you are copying files to a folder and files with such names (as we are copying) exist in the target folder. So by default you can overwrite them, skip or manually rename. But you can also choose before copying (clicking on Options button in Copy window) auto-renaming. This way if you e.g. already have a file: mytext.txt, you will get a new one: mytext(1).txt

Sorry but am I the only one that thinks that the abuse of the wiki to suggest features is wrong?icfu wrote:I have added a feature suggestion in the Wiki:

I thought in the wiki only TC facts should be inserted...
Hoecker sie sind raus!
Ghisler has invented these catagories so maybe you should ask him?
Personally I think that a WIKI is perfectly suited for feature proposals because people can work it out together in a concerted editing action instead of writing lots of useless blabla like "am i the only one that thinks that this and that is bla and blubb".
A Wiki is not a collection of facts because there is no authority you can ask if this and that is correct. The other contributors will tell you if you are right or wrong.
Do not ask! Contribute!
If you like to discuss about if it's good or not you can do so in the discussion tab on the corresponding Wiki site.
