When an item in the separate tree is selected, and the user would be able e.g. to choose "Rename" from a context menu, then that item should be renamed. I can't see a problem there. Concerning a drag and drop operation, the source is where the dragging starts, and the target is where the item is dropped.
Users who want to have 2 file panels and 2 trees with full functionality (and without wrong [+]) side by side can easily achieve this by starting 2 instances of the Windows Explorer. In TC 7 there are currently 2 different trees, both with limited functionality (and both show wrong [+] in front of folders on the desktop). And now I read that all this is by design ... So people who want to use a program with a clean an user-friendly interface will have to use a different file manager.
