[ADVICE] default paths for installation and settings

Default path for installation should be C:\Program Files\Total Commander or something like that. Who the hell installs it on C:\totalcmd???

Default path for settings should be Application Data. This is applications settings dir on windows platform that most developers ignore. Windows dir is the last place to put your settings file.

Actually, I install to c:\totalcmd, and I keep the settings files in the c:\totalcmd directory. Seems to work very well.

Agreed on install dir. I keep my root C folder clean with only neccessary stuff in it.

About settings, I like to keep program files and program settings together as I don't use multi user environment, even on XP Pro.

I had asked this question a long time ago and apparently, c:\totalcmd is kept for backwards compatibility. Believe it or not, there are still TC users out there who use... Windows 3.x! Search the forum a little, you may find this old topic.

I agree, however my opinion was (and still is) that since some standards exist (i.e. "C:\Program Files" for application installations, "Documents and settings" for settings, etc), it would be nice if all apps tried to follow them. If i have understood correctly though, it would make things more complicated (development-wise) and difficult to keep backwards-compatible so Christian choose to let things as is.

It's very easy to check what version of OS TC is running under and suggest "c:\totalcmd" for Win3.x and "C:\Program Files\...." for other Win versions.
So OS version is not an argument in favor of "c:\totalcmd"

Hi, folks.

Check the history.txt, please.
The default installation folder had been changed to %programfiles%\Totalcmd and had to be changed back to C:\Totalcmd.

26.07.06 Fixed: Revert to c:\totalcmd as default install directory (can of course be changed manually)

I assume the reason was that on most NT based systems everybody may create the folder C:\Totalcmd, but only admin and power users may create %programfiles%\Totalcmd.
