comparing files with TABs

Post by *uffe_K »

When I compare files by content and there are TABs in them, each TAB is expanded to 8 spaces. With multiple TABs that mean all the actual text is way off the screen to the right. Could this be changed to TAB = 1 or 2 spaces? Or turn it into a setting?

:) Again… …

I support as an INI entry prior, like I showed in your OTHER THREAD.
- It seems it's too late for a GUI option, because it needs translations,
moreover the dialogue-box is full to bursting, it should need a redesign…

 Strange, works fine here since years with:
Wincmd.ini wrote:[Lister]
TabWidth=4
for both "Lister" and "Compare content".

:) Hello !

• I checked here with 5 as the TAB width in Lister, that doesn't work, i.e. I've 10 pixels
(8 default+2 as normal letters spacing) while I would get 7 pixels…
- I made a screen-shot >> Blown up ×16 with a 1-pixel grid mesh…
- Same in Lister and Compare with 7.5 ß-6
:?:

Indeed it works now. Perhaps I didn't restart TCMD properly when I tested before.

Do you use a variable or a fixed width font?
I guess you can't control the tab width correctly for variable fonts by counting pixels and comparing them with average character distances.

:) Again…

• The font used in my tests is Dina, so a fixed font…
- Please, see THIS IMAGE (×16) where the blue "5 pixels" are the setting for one tab,
while the spacing is at least too wide by 1 pixel (red¦cream hatched).

After so many years Lister's parameter TabWidth could not make it into Options dialog.
But help file easily could mention that this same setting also affects "Compare by Content" tool.
Currently help line in [Lister] section tells only this:

Code: Select all

TabWidth=8 Width of tabstops (default: 8)
