It would be nice if I could close and open groups in FTP connection list using left/right arrows.

Uh, that's already possible. Although pressing Cursor-left on a connection inside a folder acts like Cursor-up (putting the cursor one entry upwards), as soon as the cursor is on a folder, Cursor-left will collapse that folder and Cursor-right will expand it.
