Improving and unification of the Print UI

Post by *Slavic »

Currently the printing-related UI in TC and Lister look different and disjointed. Here are the details:

1) In TC, "Print directory" UI looks quite good and carefully designed, it has a preview. However, the behaviour of "Print Content" highly depends on the chosen file: for pictures, it shows the special UI with preview and a lot of options (select printer, paper size, resolution, size and orientation etc). But for simple text files the printing UI doesn't exist at all, the content is being sent to Notepad without any option or selection, even the button "Print" which would allow user to prepare or cancel printing, doesn't exist. Word files use the default Word settings etc.
2) Lister, contrary, has two UI, "Print" and "Print setup", but they look quite ancient. Apparently they haven't been much changed since Windows 95. Preview doesn't exist even for the pictures, changing the orientation is available only via the print driver settings, layout cannot be selected at all. Text files don't have any preview, even the selected font isn't available as preview.

Suggestions:
1) Make the unification of the printing UI in TC and Lister, using the best of currently available options. For the pictures, preview UI should be available in both TC (as it already exists) and Lister. "Print" UI in TC could be modernised at least to Windows XP level or, better, as shown on the Printing, "Printer-friendly version" illustration (Windows 7 UI). The Windows 8 Notepad is another example of built-in modern Print and Page Setup UI. I think no need to invent something special, standard Windows UI looks quite good.
2) Any printing UI, whether it is very simple or complex, should have at least the [ Print ] and [x] (close) or [ Cancel ] buttons, so the situation when printing to a default printer with default settings starts immediately, or a file is being immediately sent to a default program, shouldn't happen.

1. Print content is done by the associated programs which provide a "print" option.

2. Would be nice, but it would be a HUGE addition taking several months to add.
