Auto adjust columns widths. 2021-Edition

Post by *Stiltzkin »

a bump for this 2009 thread:
margolis22 wrote: 2009-04-17, 04:28 UTC It would be nice to double click between columns and they would auto size the the length of the content. A lot of times the EXT field is a lot larger than it needs to be so instead of dragging the field to shrink it, double clicking to auto adjust the size of the column would save a lot of time.

also an option to keep the columns (except 'Name) aligned/fixated to the right.
there's often so much empty space between the scrollbar and the 'ext'/custom-columns.

suggestion:

As above:
[lis=]auto-size columns on doubleclick on the divider between columns (expected behaviour in most apps)[/list]

In the "Custom columns" dialog:
  • add an 'auto' settings to width
  • keep custom columns glued to the right

I did consider it at the time, but didn't implement it because it would require that TC loads all the fields. This can be very problematic for slow loading fields like DirSizeCalc - the program would be blocked for several seconds or even minutes. Just try to sort by a column like this to understand what I mean.

Don't reload anything. Just use max size visible in a panel, as many Windows apps do.

yes, i would assume most of the time there's no plugin calculation in the background involved. and even if there are pending operations, you could just ignore columns with a '?'.

That would be quite easy to do, but would it really be what users expect?

Christian,
Or simply use the widths of the available data. If only data for 3 files has loaded, adjust width according to that. If data for all files has loaded, use that.

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

I think that users accept well known solution, though some people may still request something better. Of course you can use more data, if available.

Not feasible. Every time a file is added or removed the wish to resize can be there. Make beforehand a reasonable guess and adjust it only when it is not working.

Do you really know how auto-adjust on-demand work?
Do you use custom column modes or custom view modes in TC?
Do you work with Excel or other spreadsheet?
Do you work with tables in Access or other databases?

Do you think that my beard is on the avatar only?
Don't tell me well known tales from the DOS crypt, provide living examples for Windows apps, please. For apps which can work with million records, of course.

I have proposed a simple and fast solution: viewtopic.php?p=396063#p396063
Could you stay on topic and propose anything on your own? Or make any opinion at least, please. For me it's the only solution usable for automatic resizing. Other propositions may be better for resizing on demand, when users expect that resizing may take a long time.

[OT]
You can assume that I find many forum contributions very interesting and read them carefully.
I consider this topic to be a brainstorming session which, for some unknown reason (bad vibrations?), suddenly threatened
to degenerate into a small-scale war. That's a pity, because I appreciate professional (including your) contributions very much.[\OT]
Back to topic:
If there is any change in this topic ("Auto adjust..."), then I would like to see that this is ONLY OPTIONALLY adjustable.
