fenix_productions wrote: 2021-04-19, 11:11 UTC It is not a function but development time for XY features is astounding.

i.e.
I forget to update polish.lng file for it for a month or two. Go to forum after that time and it appears there were dozen of betas or even 1 or 2 main releases during that time and a lot of features added. I would really see similar model of work for TC instead of some versions each year or so.

TC may have thousands of items on TODO list we know nothing about and some feature suggestions wait for years to even get single comment.

I am still using TC daily but it is not the only file manager I use. In the past it had 100% of my time and now it decreases to 60%. The rest is slowly taken by XY. I am afraid that with current development it may drop to 0 one day. You may even see it with my activity on this board. With time I had started to be fed up. Clo (rip) had great ideas, same with Lefteous but they sank with time.

Why I am leaning towards XY, you may ask… "Minitree" is the one of the answers. I have never used tree views in TC but XY I use `em each time because Minitree can focus only on paths I am using. Preview panes, mouse-click zoom, translator app, scriptable custom columns (scripts are almost everywhere), Paper Folders, Tags database…

TC still wins with some plugins but with time it gets lower on my priority list. And XY is getting some files properties built in with time.
I agree mostly with you but I have TC configured to compare files and sync folders,
because this 2 functions are so bad in XY (almost unusable).
Also I have configured TC as viewer in addition to the XY preview functions.
Not to forget I use TC for archive handling which is only rudimentarily in XY and needs scripts.
So for my usage of XYplorer I still need TC :)

As I work mostly in TC and sometimes in XY I have buttons in each to start the other.
The TC button to start XYplorer

Code: Select all

TOTALCMD#BAR#DATA
C:\Tools\XYplorer\XYplorer.exe
"%P%N||%T%M"
C:\Tools\XYplorer\XYplorer.exe
XYplorer

-1
The script on the XY button to start TC
run "C:\Tools\Wincmd\totalcmd64.exe /O /A ""<curitem>"" ""<get selectedItemsPathNames <crlf> i>"""
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3374)
TC 11.03 x64 / x86

I bought Beyond Compare licence few years ago (and renewing it when needed).

For basic compare I use TC for more advanced – BC ;)

Code: Select all

Comparetool=e:\soft\BeyondCompare4\BCompare.exe
I also have few TC / XY buttons for it :)

TC is like Leatherman multitool for me: great for everyday usage, used very often and carry with me daily but for some tasks I need better tools around (i.e. Knipex pliers are lot better than L).

In past I had considered TC as the best tool of all (and spent a lot of time on this board) but – sadly – after all those years now it takes less and less of it. TC is great and stable but… sometimes… too stable. Last few years… no excitement for me to hear about new version as most of new features I am not interested in. I feel like nothing revolutionary comes and only all updates are additions to what already existed and was good enough for me.

In comparison: XY. Guy tries to add something new all the time and I had even made some "investment" in his manager. To be precise: I suggested some translation tools updates / fixes / implementations (which he took to hearth) to make translations lot easier. It is not a walk through mysterious INI file, comparing old and new LNG versions. You have nice tool for translation with a lot of features specific to its own, like: missing accelerators, multiple plurals (Polish has them) or even replacing dots with ellipsis… something TC may never have. For TC I need to ask people around for difres tool or english.lng. Maybe because I am not official translator or something else is the reason, I do not know. For XY you have all of it by default. You can even make Pig Latin for yourself with ease, if you want to ;)

For XY: I report some issue with translation and have an answer in one day or two. With TC? I have no idea how long will it take.

Wrong. TC is Swiss made. It's like Swiss Army Cyber Tool. ;-P

Both of your variants for Everything settings work although I have shifted to Everything Alpha, exclusively, as have you.

The only Everything related items in wincmd.ini are "UseEverythingInstance=1.5a"
and "Everything =1"; I do not have "Everything = "%Commander_Path%\Addons\Everything Alpha\Everything64.exe" in wincmd.ini.

Thanks for the .ini settings

Thank you for your feedback!
jinsight wrote: 2021-04-19, 21:32 UTC"Everything =1"
I think you mean this option...

Code: Select all

UseEverything=1
TC-Help (F1): wrote:Use the tool "Everything" for searching (-1=hide option, 1=enabled if present, 0=disabled)
If 'Everything' is started and the option 'Everything' in TC is checked in the "Find Files"-window,
then this results in this entry in the file wincmd.ini under section [Configuration].
jinsight wrote: 2021-04-19, 21:32 UTC"I do not have "Everything = "%Commander_Path%\Addons\Everything Alpha\Everything64.exe" in wincmd.ini.
If you start 'Everything' regularly with the PC, e.g. with this option in 'Everything':

Code: Select all

[✓] Start Everything on system startup
then you do not need this entry.

Such an entry becomes interesting if you only call 'Everything' manually from time to time,
because then, after clicking on the option 'Everything' in the "Find Files"-window, 'Everything' is started in the background,
at the following entry (based on your data):

Code: Select all

Everything="%Commander_Path%\Addons\Everything Alpha\Everything64.exe -startup"

Karl

I still think these are functions in XYPlorer that might be useful in [now] TC11.

Many thanks from me for the Buttons - with my Button in TC XYplorer starts only without opening the right folders. And scripting is not my daily work...so now I can use it vice versa.

It might be mentioned before (just skimmed all these posts), but XY has much better mouse support. A lot of very useful functions are a right mouse click away.
I think it would help if TC switched from using a ListBox control to a ListView control to represent the filelist.
That opens up a lot of options in that regard.

That might also make it easier to add additional info such as tags or more colours per FILE (name blue, extention different colour depending on RULE or "tags" after filename - quick illustration viewtopic.php?p=395223#p395223 - if a user wants to make it look ugly, let them :))

There is a filemanager - can't recall which one atm. - that could use different background colours in the date column(s) to show it's (rough) date at a glance. I did like that idea.
