Functions in XYPlorer That Might Be Useful in TC10

Post by *jinsight »

In another post, Horst.Epp referred to "my other file manager XYplorer."

I wonder if he, or anyone else, could point out functions he uses in XYPlorer, unavailable in TC, that could be usefully added to TC10.

TC is much better in archive handling and file viewing
but among others XYplorer has functions like:

- Paper Folders (like Virtual Panel but so much better)
- Native Scripting in all places even on buttons (I use it to integrate Everything and Windows search for example)
- Condtional execution of scripts on many places
- Flexible buttons with multiple functions and conditions
- Many small enhancements compared to other file managers

TC is still my daily file manager but I also have a life time license for XYplorer.

Ctrl+Scroll wheel for fonts scale. Like now for thumbnails.

Easier File & Folder Viewing Options

View File Contents or Folder Subfolders
Mouse over a file or folder to see file contents or subfolder list for folder

View Images Preview - Mouse Over
Mouse over image thumbnail and scroll mouse wheel to see larger preview

View Images Preview - Mouse Down
Mouse down image thumbnail to see pannable preset-size preview

None of these are significant improvements. OTOH, Total Commander is a mature product so ease of use features take on added importance, in my opinion.

View Images Preview - Mouse Over/Down
Why write about what is already added?

I am using the Imagus addon for Firefox which shows a full resolution image (fitted to screen) upon hovering over a thumbnail. Never thought about adding similar functionality to TC (upon mouse press as suggested, or while holding Ctrl, or so), but why not? Support++.

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

I like that XYplorer feature and use it a lot.
So also from me Support++ for a TC version.

Off topic: How did you get Everything 1.5.0.1247a (x64) to work in TC? I installed it. It worked fine standing alone. It didn't work in TC - "not installed" - even when pointed to in the Configuration section of the TC ini file (Everything = %Commander_Path%\Addons\Everything\Everything64.exe -startup).

You have to make the following entry in wincmd.ini with your path of course:
Everything=C:\Tools\Everything\Everything64.exe

Also make the following entry in the Everything-1.5a.ini while Everyting is not running):
alpha_instance=0
With this you no longer should set UseEverythingInstance=1.5a in wincmd.ini.

Everything must be running and the sevice installed as normal.

Off topic: I seem to be in a catch-22. If alpha instance=1, Everything starts standalone but TC reports it is not installed. If alpha instance=0, Everything hangs standalone; TC reports it is installed but it does not find anything upon searching..

I proceeded from this:
Mouse over image thumbnail and scroll mouse wheel to see larger preview
Now there is for thumbnails (preview analogy). And you didn't specify the moment with the pop-up window.

Hi,
I also followed the instructions of Horst.Epp.
For me, it works as described here.

I would be interested to know if a variant works for you and if so, which one.

It is not a function but development time for XY features is astounding.

i.e.
I forget to update polish.lng file for it for a month or two. Go to forum after that time and it appears there were dozen of betas or even 1 or 2 main releases during that time and a lot of features added. I would really see similar model of work for TC instead of some versions each year or so.

TC may have thousands of items on TODO list we know nothing about and some feature suggestions wait for years to even get single comment.

I am still using TC daily but it is not the only file manager I use. In the past it had 100% of my time and now it decreases to 60%. The rest is slowly taken by XY. I am afraid that with current development it may drop to 0 one day. You may even see it with my activity on this board. With time I had started to be fed up. Clo (rip) had great ideas, same with Lefteous but they sank with time.

Why I am leaning towards XY, you may ask… "Minitree" is the one of the answers. I have never used tree views in TC but XY I use `em each time because Minitree can focus only on paths I am using. Preview panes, mouse-click zoom, translator app, scriptable custom columns (scripts are almost everywhere), Paper Folders, Tags database…

TC still wins with some plugins but with time it gets lower on my priority list. And XY is getting some files properties built in with time.
