Copy the Log file -> logging stops working

Post by *Flint »

Report from the Russian forum.

Try to copy the log file totalcmd.log anywhere. After that logging stops working at all. You need to restart TC, or explicitly turn off and then turn on the logging in TC settings.

:) Hello K. !

• I can't confirm here.

- I've K:\TC_7-tests\Journaux\totalcmd.log as the active log-file
- I copied it to K:\A.x\totalcmd.log
- I kept TC opened…

- I made some operation (move etc.) and they are logged OK…

• I use "All at home" still , despite someones don't like this… :P
- Log files are not vital data.

I can not confirm this. If copy the log file, it just continues to work, if I move the log file, a new one is made immediately starting from scratch.

What are your log file settings?

Mine are: http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/logfilesetup.png

Mine are the same, expect for the size of 1000 Kbytes and 30 log file copies. My TEMP is \Windows\Temp directory.

I even tried with fresh INI file:

Code: Select all

[Configuration]
LogFile=%TEMP%\totalcmd.log
LogOptions=7263
LogRotateLimit=1000
LogKeepCount=30
[left]
path=D:\WINDOWS\Temp\
[right]
path=c:\
When I start TC with these settings, I see a new log entry added (Program start). After that I copy totalcmd.log from the left panel (D:\WINDOWS\Temp\) to the right panel (C:\). No entry appear in LOG file, and no more entries appear there at all.

I still can not confirm.

My settings:

LogFile=%TEMP%\totalcmd.log
LogOptions=7263
LogKeepCount=7
LogRotateLimit=100
[left]
path=F:\TEMP\
[right]
path=C:\

and my log file keeps happily logging after being copied.

Maybe your copy settings are different? Like compatibility mode, or Explorer mode, this could influence this phenomena a lot.
I dont have this problem, so cannot confirm it.
My copy settings:
Use compatibility mode for the following drives: *
Also use big file copy mode (not using cache)
Copy comments with files.
I switched to Linux, bye and thanks for all the fish!

You were right! If I turn off comptability mode for the drives I get the behaviour Flint describes!

I had "Compatibility mode for the following drives: *" set like that for testing purposes, and forgot to turn it off again , I so didn't think of that.

Thanks for finding that! I always set compatibility mode off (except for the USB flash drives), so I didn't even think about this option. :)

Thanks for your report. What happens is the following:
- TC tries to log the copy while the source file is still open
- Opening of the log file fails
-> TC turns off logging

I made two changes now:
1. TC now logs the copy only after closing the file
2. TC now turns off logging only if the initial writing to the log file fails (TC start report)
