* Open the Multi-Rename Tool.
* Enter "a" in the edit box "Step by".

An error message is shown: 'a' not a valid integer value. Please report this error to the Author..

Confirmed.
Entered letters seem to always work as value "1".

Since the given value doesn't work, I would expect a similar error message earlier -
maybe when moving the cursor out of this field (to be the least annoying).
Who the hell is General Failure, and why is he reading my disk?

A similar error message which is asking if the program must be terminated, should not occur at all.

The strange thing is that it happens in the "step by" field but no in the "start with" field.

Not strange. Letters are supported in the "start with" field! However it is quite buggy. More about this later..
