[TC 10 b3] Thumbnail view crashes

Post by *freaktenstein »

This bug is also present in latest 9.51 version.
OS: Windows 10 Pro x65 EN 20H2 19042.870

I configured Thumbnails -> "Use Explorer method (OLE2) for:" *.mp4 - to get Thumbnails for MP4 Videos from Windows Explorer.

Then I switch to thumbnail view and it works, until....any saved mp4 video file saved from WhatsApp-Web is in the folder, then TC crashes without error message, it simply exits immediately when it tries to display the thumbnail for that file. No error in eventlog.

Link to an example video that crashes TC for me:

Thanks for the video. I do not get any crash here with it. It could be a codec (video filter) problem.

Are you able to load the video with graphstudionext?

Important: If you use Total Commander 64-bit, also use graphstudionext 64-bit.

Thank you. The video loads and plays well with graphstudionext64.exe.
In Windows Explorer, selecting medium, large or extra large icons to show a thumbnail of this mp4 works, too, a thumbnail of the first video frame is correctly shown. I have K-Lite Codec Pack 16.1.0 Mega installed.

Hi again, I tested it in a fresh Win10 64bit VM. Without K-Lite Codec Pack it works well!
With K-Lite Codec Pack (Mega, Standard installation...just clicked next, next, next...) installed, TC exits when switching to Thumbnail view in a folder that contains the mentioned video.

Okay, when I open the Codec Tweak Tool 6.5.0 and go to Miscellaneous -> Thumbnails and deactivate Thumbnail generation for file type MP4, TC does not exit anymore, but also does not show any thumbnails for mp4 files anymore, of course :-)

Re: [TC 10 b3] Thumbnail view crashes

Post by *freaktenstein »

I think I found it. I had Thumbnail size in TC configured to 120 x 80 pixels.

When I change this to something square, like 96 x 96 or 128 x 128, all mp4 thumbnails are displayed correctly in TC using Windows Explorer OLE2 method, and of course TC does not exit anymore.

So it's definitely the tn size in combination with K-Lite Thumbnail preview.

Thanks for the extra analysis! Maybe I should request Explorer thumbnails with multiple of 16 and then resize myself?

Hmm, not sure if requesting tnsize%16=0 is the solution, since the exit always happens for me when tn-side a != b.

I tested for example:

96x96 - working
128x96 - not working
128x112 - not working
128x128 - working
101x101 - working (!)

I have no special Codecs installed and only use the LAV inside of TC
and the size 128x112 crashes for me to.
My normal setting is 128x128 and thats fine.
Here the Windows error report from it

You write:
I have no special Codecs installed
But your error report shows that you have for example this loaded:

Code: Select all

LoadedModule[119]=C:\Program Files\Media Preview\swscale-mp-2.dll
Seems pretty much to me to be a module of the same kind as freaktenstein's swscale-ics-5.dll

"C:\Program Files\Media Preview" is not a standard Windows 10 folder (at least I don't have it).

I have tested K-Lite, MediaPreview and Icaros for Thumbnail generation support for certain file types (like mp4). They're all using the same libraries from the ffmpeg project basically, and the "TC Exit" issue is happening with all 3 solutions for certain mp4 thumbnails with 2 different side lengths.
