Columns behaviour when separator 100% & 1/2 screen

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

No, sorry, column widths are calculated from the main window size, the separator doesn't influence them. If you need different column widths in the left and right panel, you will need to define custom columns. Currently there are no plans to change this behaviour.

Is there a way to accomplish what I want without having to reset the column widths when I return it to full screen, or can it be implemented?
You may use a command sequence like

Code: Select all

cm_VerticalPanels,cm_100Percent
to switch to a single panel view and a second sequence

Code: Select all

cm_VerticalPanels,cm_50Percent
to return to dual panel view.
In this case the single panel view should adapt nicely to the windows width.

In other words, if I were to reduce TC to 1/4 the width of the screen, each column would shrink to 1/4 its current widt
No, it is only the Name column that is adjusted.
