TC 9.50b2: Archive viewer doesn't ask for Admin rights

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

TC 9.50b2: Archive viewer doesn't ask for Admin rights

Post by *Slavic »

This is more a historical problem of TC rather than a bug in current version, but from user point it looks like a bug.

Sometimes users need to look at the directories and files created with different user account. For example, some backup programs have an option to mount the created backup as a drive and assigned it a letter, this allows to browse a whole backup, view and copy the old files. When the backup has been created on another PC, the files usually can be accessed only with Admin rights (elevated).

TC correctly asks for Admin rights when we attempt to enter the user directory, it shows the dialog:

Access denied on file
<file or dir name>
[ OK ] [ As Administrator ]

The same happens when we try to look the content of particular document, e.g. to view a text or picture in Lister (F3). A similar dialog is shown when we try to copy a file to a local drive. However, when we try to view the file list of an archive (e.g. *.ZIP) by double-click or Enter, TC shows the error message:

Error in packed file
<filename>
[ OK ]

But in fact, the archive is not damaged. To work with it, we either need to copy it to a local drive or start TC as Administrator. The problem is in the code of archive viewer which doesn't check whether this archive needs the Admin access, it shows the wrong error message instead. Please make it possible to ask in the same way when browse the normal files. Or at least the error message could inform about lack of Admin rights.

Currently this isn't supported because it would be very difficult to support for the various file formats, and impossible for plugins.

Well, I understand. Maybe it's relatively less hard to do with built-in ZIP archiver, but anyway it's not a bug which needs to be fixed ASAP. Maybe one time in the future... As for now, users can easily run TC as Administrator, if they know what to do.

So, please think about the error message: I hope it would be possible to change it and suggest to restart TC as Admin.
