Directory hot keys not always visible.

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Directory hot keys not always visible.

Post by *vdijken »

When you use CTRL+D you see your favourite directories WITH the hot keys (underlined letters) you defined with a & in the name e.g. to distinguishes between the Documents and the Download directory which start both with a "D" . But when you click on the * in the top right corner of the panels or you use the entry in the Commands menu you don't see those hot keys. Even though they work there, you need to know by heart what those hot keys are! This was also the case in previous releases; time to make it the same in all 3 cases?
I use the 64 bits version in the latest Windows version 20H2.

I cannot confirm this - Testet with TC 10 b2 32bit and 64bit under Windows 7 and Windows 10, in both Dark and Normal mode.

Could it be a theme problem - are you by any chance using Classic theme?

Where do I change the theme? Changing between Dark and Normal makes no difference. I use the Dutch version of Windows and TC. Sometimes it is hard to find the equivalence of an English term in Dutch.
In the TC help file I could not find anything useful.

I meant Windows' Theme - but since you are using Windows 10, and didn't know what I was referring to, then it is unlikely that you are using Classic theme, since it is not a part of standard Windows 10.

EDIT: Maybe you have not enabled underlining of keyboard shurtcuts in menus - do you see underlined hotkeys in TC's main menu?

If not you have to enable this in Windows' Settings -> "Ease of access" -> "Interaction - Keyboard" -> "Change how keyboard shortcuts work" -> "Underline Access keys when available"

You can also use the old Control panel (control.exe): "Ease of access center" -> "Make the keyboard easuer to use" -> "Make it easier to use keyboard shortcuts" -> "Underline keyboard shortcuts and access keys"

This depends on a Windows setting, and is the same in almost all Windows programs (definitely the ones shipped with Windows), and it usually applies to any various kinds of controls, including buttons, menus and so on. See Windows Control Panel > Accessibility options or Ease of Access Features. Might be in the Settings app on Windows 10 though. See petermad's post above.

No, the point is that I can call the directory favourites sub window in 3 different ways as mentioned in the original post; one shows the hot keys as it should be the case, the other 2 not! I my opinion this should be the same code, so the circumstances before that code is used are different.

Did you change the Windows setting as suggested? As I said, Windows has been behaving that way for, I don't know, 10 years at least.

One could also choose to see it as a bug (or a feature) - that you do see underlined shortcut letters when you press the [*] button, when you in Windows settings has chosen NOT to underline keyboard shortcuts and access keys.

In my opinion (I write and review programs during 50 years) the preconditions for calling the same subroutine to present the same favourite directories are different. I has nothing to do with Windows settings otherwise all of the 3 options could show the hot keys or not.

It is a Windows feature which affects all menus - for example, the main menu also only shows underlines when you open it via keyboard Alt+Letter, not when you open it with the mouse.

Like any other (popup) menu on Windows...

But it's about hotkeys, not the way of opening/closing a menu.

How can I navigate in menu when I can't use Polish letters (written with AltGr)?

You should open a new topic for/with a new bug report.
