Remove master password from android phone

Post by *sfoster »

Hi - I have managed to forget the master password used for encrypting SMB share passwords with the LAN plugin on my android phone. Yes, silly I know, and I know it can't be recovered. I have tried removing the entire app and plugin from the phone with the intention of re-installing and starting from scratch, but it still asks for the master password after re-installation. Short of wiping the phone completely is it possible to remove everything and start again? Thanks, Sam.

Hi sfoster and welcome.

Maybe this solution from 2017 will still work?

>> How can i delete the Master Password of the ftp plugin

Basically:
- search for the "TotalCommander.xml"
<system root>/data/data/com.ghisler.android.TotalCommander/shared_prefs/
- create an backup of that file
- modify "TotalCommander.xml" and remove the line "AESVerify"

Master password is removed that way and you can set a new one.

But passwords for connections are not decrypted,
you need to open the properties of each connection,
and uncheck the "protect with master password" option.
Or delete all connections and create new ones without that option.

You can actually reset the master password via user interface too!

Here's how it works:
1. Try to establish a connection.
2. Total Commander asks for the master password.
3. Click on "Change master password", while leaving the password field blank.
-> There is an error message that the master password is wrong.
4. Now click on "Cancel" or the "Back" button.
-> Now the master password is deleted, and you can define a new one. Unfortunately with that, all your stored passwords would be lost, unless you later remember your old master password. Then repeat this procedure with the old password.
