TC 3-23 slow with Android 11 (amazon Music Downloads)

Post by *Gerd Brom »

Is TC 3-23 generally slow with Android 11 ?
I check the amazon Music download folder (.../structure /data/com.amazon.mp3) with 258 folders and 290 files resulting in 535 MB (1 high quality UHD album) on:
(a) Samsung SM-T595 tablet with Android 10
(b) Poco X3 Pro Android 11 (allegedly very fast storage)

While TC checks the tree instantaneous on (a) (internal storage as fast as on SD-card) it takes about 15 sec on (b).

Can I do anything about that?

No, you can't change that - these folders under Android/data can only be accessed via the Android Storage Access Framework, which is indeed terribly slow compared to the regular file functions.

Thank you for your competent answer.

This is a pity.
TC counts very long in A-11 if I want to check ### GBs of space taken by my amazon Music.

Is /storage/####-####/Android/data/com.amazon.mp3 on the SD card (2nd amazon Music storage option) also affected?
Are all other storage locations (outside Android/data) not affected (than I will ask amazon to offer a custom location)?

It is hard to understand that the manufacturers praise ultra fast storage on their phones, if the OS cannot assess it quickly ...

I switched to an SD card on my A-11 phone for the amazon offline music, hoping I could check with TC there faster, but I cannot even get access ...

Is it still state of the art, that we cannot access an SD-card folder
####-####/Android/data/com.amazon.mp3
with the latest TC under Android-11?

I used to check amazon Musics data consumption (this folder, if the SC card is chosen) with TC before Android 11 fast and without problems.

If I chose the internal storage for amazon Music, TC can read:
storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.amazon.mp3
but is very slow (see above).

If I click the SD card folder ####-####/Android/data/com.amazon.mp3 in TC, it tells me to grant write access in a special Android dialog.
If I say "Ja" it opens a file manager (probably the internal one for my POCO X3 Pro) and asks: Use this folder (apparently "Android")?
If I confirm, it goes back to the original message asking to grant the special write access and ####-####/Android/data/com.amazon.mp3 is still locked.
com.amazon.mp3 is not offered in the file manager since it shows only "media" as an Android subfolder.

I share the sequence here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/9YSbyxkYpiW1FKhf7

It looks as if there is a way to do it, but I cannot figure how to grant this permission ...

Thank You

No, you cannot access that folder on the SD card, see my other post here:

Thanks for referring to the post.

Just for full clarification, you say there:
"... it's not possible to access it [/storage/1234-5678/Android/data] on the SD card on Samsung devices."

But my device is another one - a POCO X3 Pro.
Is there any hope for other devices?

Some other devices allow it, e.g. Xiaomi. To access it, go to the TC home folder, click on the blue "+" icon and add either the root of the SD card or the Android folder. You should then be able to navigate to Android/data from there. This is ONLY for the SD card, not for internal memory, and it does not work on all phones.

Although POCO was (is?) a Xiaomi brand, I had no luck.
The dialog after clicking the blue PLUS offers only the "media" folder in the "Android" directory.
So I am afraid I am out of luck?

I could create a user specific location "SDcard/Android" this way, but it also only shows the "media" folder.

Is the above dialog part of TC (no other apps are showing) or does TC call a built in File Manager or System screen (if have not been aware of before)?

It's a system dialog. If it can't see the data folder, then Total Commander can't see it either.
You could unmount the sd card, remove it from the phone, put it in an USB on the go card reader and access it via USB, then you would see the folder. It's stupid but it works.

Thanks.
Yes the PC can read the card.
But since these phone trays are such fiddly mechanics (SIM falls out) you don't want to mess with them unless absolutely required ;-o

Your only other options are to not store any data under Android/data on the SD card. Most apps allow to choose the directory where to store the data, or at least choose between internal memory and SD card. Android/data in the internal memory /storage/emulated/0 can still be accessed, the same directory on the SD card can't on most devices.
