Win 8 32/64 · TC 8.01 icon won't display (Solved)

Post by *JohnFredC »

I have installed both TC32 (C:\Utilities\TotalCommander) and TC64 (C:\Utilities\TC64) in my new Win8 environment.

After installing, both execute properly
, either from an Explorer window or from the desktop shortcuts I created in explorer with "Send to".

HOWEVER,

Neither EXE displays a proper TC icon. Not in Explorer (!) and not on the Desktop shortcuts, either. Attempting to reassign the correct icon (using the Properties dialog) for either version fails w/o an error message.

See image below:

Is this a TC issue? A Windows 8 issue?

TIA for any guidance.

Hi Herman, thanks for responding.

Yes, I'm a very long time registered user and both copies were downloaded directly from ghisler.com.

The EXEs contain the correct icon, as you can see from the image link above.

One odd thing is that TC itself (when its own folder is displayed in a file panel) and other file managers show the correct icons for Totalcmd.exe and Totalcmd64.exe. Explorer doesn't, and the desktop doesn't. As you can see from the image, the properties dialog identifies the correct icon, will even let me chose it and apply, but with no result.

But the really weird thing is that the TC icon displays correctly in the desktop toolbar (pinned to the task bar)...

I'm running as administrator, BTW, and have rebooted several times in case this behavior was transient.

Perhaps this is yet another idiosyncrasy of Win 8 (sigh).

Does it help to rebuild the Icon Cache?

Edit:
Thread title: "Win 8 32/64 · TC 8.02 icon won't display"

Did i miss a TC- version? :)

This could also be caused by a virus scanner. With some scanners, it takes a ridiculously long time to show some EXE icons...

2HolgerK

Thank you!

Rebuilding the icon cache appears to have worked. All TC icons are displayed properly once again. Thanks for the tip! I had seen that advice but it didn't appear to apply to my situation. I learned a thing or two in the process... So only Windows uses the cache? Everyone else goes directly to the file to get the icon?

(PS. I renamed the thread! Slip of the key... :( )

It probably wasn't the virus scanner, since the condition had persisted for several days.
