9.21a (x64) The app closes/crashes when menu button pressed

Post by *cm1924 »

Sometimes Total Commander closes (crashes?) when one of the menu items is chosen (File, Mark etc.). It can also occurs when the Directory Hotlist is pressed. This only seems to happen immediately after the application starts up after powering up. There is no information in the log. I am using Windows 7 Pro.

Do you activate the menu item / dir hotlist with mouse or keyboard shortcut?

Do you get any error message? If not, do you see anything in system log?

I use the mouse to activate the menu/hotlist.

I can't find anything significant in the Windows system log. I searched using "totalcmd64". Can you suggest what I should be searching for and in which logs.

Yes, I meant in Windows event viewer, which you can reach via Control Panel - Administrative Tools.

I've dumped the various event logs to csv but can find no references to total commander crashing. It just occurred again on clicking "directory hotlist" - there seems to be a slight pause before the app closing. I had another look in the event logs but there were no events for the time of the close/crash. I use the 32bit Total Commander on my other machines and I don't remember having the same problem.

There are no error messages.

Look into the Windows Error Reports.
For me in Windows 10 its stored in:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\

I've grep'd the error reports and there is no reference to total commander. Is there anything else I can do?

No, I'm out of ideas, sorry. TC uses standard Windows menus, it doesn't handle them by itself.

An observation. About ten days ago I replaced Kaspersky Internet Security with BitDefender Total Security and now the problem seems to have gone away!

Strange, we use Kaspersky also on one PC (although just Antivirus, not Internet Security), and never had this problem...

I also have an actual Kaspersky Anti-Virus and no such problem occurs.
