The Material theme Atom icons could be a great choice.
They are simple, elegant and modern. I use them with my IDE (IntelliJ) and it works great. They're under MIT license. I would love to have them bundled with TC.

i'd rather advocate for a themepack-feature, which would bundle icons, font and colors in one easy-to-switch file.

You mean this picture:

Can you name all the icons in the first column on this picture?

You're right, the link I provided regroups the file type icons only, not the main ones.
But the whole material theme contains all the icons we would need for TC.

This picture shows some usable icons :

TC is a Windows program. Do you really want it to mimic MacOS?

IntelliJ is a Java base IDE available for all platforms. The look and feel of this app has nothing to do with MacOS. It is juste a coincidence if this screenshot has been taken on a MacOS version of intelliJ. I personaly use it on Windows since the first version.
The Material theme is just a vector based buch of beautiful modern icons ; available for all platforms.

Here is a screenshot taken on my Windows:

It looks like we have a complete other understanding what beautiful is,
yours are useless for me and you only have a few icons at all.
Also I don't want modern icons from which no one can guess the function.

So .. did anyone actually post screenshots (and/or ini settings) of better looking TC layouts?
Did not find any using the forum search.

All in the eye of the beholder, obviously.

There was a topic for posting screenshots long time ago. I don't beleave they are very relevant now and if they still exist becuase forum doesn't allow hosting of images so all were hosted on different external sites.
Some of those were saved in the wiki https://www.ghisler.ch/wiki/index.php/Screenshots

You can see many screenshots linked in topics reporting problems or bugs. You can see the real TC layout there, however, many screenshots are made for TC running with a fresh ini (as it's recommended for troubleshooting).

You can search for domain names of file/image hosting services: Google Drive, OneDrive, Yandex, imgur, etc. Or search for keywords: screenshot*, image*, picture*, img, jpg, png (note wildcard * used when needed). Many of linked images are unavailable, some were moved to another site (f.e. screenshots made by @petermad).

There is even some old topic: Screenshots

but its not that trivial and requires some time/work.

default: https://i.imgur.com/zDIK1Dt.png (doesn't really fit into a "modern" win10 ecosystem)
custom: https://i.imgur.com/inTTQnK.png

i certainly would welcome a more comprehensive skin/theme support which would include colors/fonts and icons.

there you go:

https://upright-waste.000webhostapp.com

(url is randomly chosen :? )
basically its all windows 10 light mode, https://www.fatcow.com/images/fatcow-icons/fatcow-hosting-icons-3.9.2-all.zip and a custom IconLib
the custom icons are usually 32x32 fatcow icons with a 16x16 icon in a corner.

(f.e. screenshots made by @petermad).
Old screenshots of mine should be available with the same file name, but with this base folder: https://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/

You can find some alternative iconsets for TC here: https://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/icons

Thanks, solid! They look somewhat dated, indeed.
Usher wrote: 2021-05-20, 13:08 UTC You can search for domain names
I don't have a horse in this race. I just wanted to point out that if someone did/could post better looking layouts, that might turn the public opinion (I visit quite a few forums and whenever Total Commander comes up, one of the first things that got mentioned is the outdated design).

It is unlikely that those people will do a search for picture hosting domains on thsi forum. One centralized place for that might be a good idea.

Unfortunately, this link is broken. I've downloaded the IconLib-Fatcow.icl from the page you shared, and it worked.

Funny, I was thinking it was going to change the button bar icons, not the directories and files. Unfortunately, when this library doesn't have the icon, the file ends up with no icon and it gives an odd feeling, probably because of the lack of alignment. I ended up trying another one (wcicolib) that is also quite nice. I think I might look for other ones later.

Thank you very much for your assistance!!!
