Listing of files / directories (show folders AND files in alphabetic order)

Post by *pc_totcmd »

Hi All

it is possible to configure Total Commander to display directories like files?

Meaining if I have two directories "C" and "F" and two files "A.doc" and "Z.mat" then the listing in Total Commander will be:
[A.doc]
C
F
[Z.mat]

Thanks
Pierluigi

Thank you, quite a limitationin TC.
Even if this is claimed to be a safety feature I cannto agree since is my responsibility as user to select how I use the SW.
For the way I handle my stuff this is not really ideal.

I really don't see any situation where this is needed of convenient. Maybe a bad placement of files, but not on daily bases applicable or handy for a clever user. With directories I do different things then with files. It is quite an useless wish. Or use CTRL-S to see all dirs and files starting with the same letter(s) or digit(s). Mr. Ghisler is right.

Do not agree. I do a lot of consulting and I do not use paper notes anymore, therefore, I scan all my notes or archive any file I have depending on their date.

Sometime, I have several files, thus, I create a folder with DATE.NAME. For example:
[2021.07.30 Duscussion of TC Forum]
some other time I have only one file:
2021.07.30 TC Forum Printout.pdf

at the end I would like to see them sorted by date regardless if they are folder or files.

I can see the reason for non-group sorting of directories in a case like that.

As a workaround, may I suggest that you pack the content of the folders in archives in stead. They will sort with the files.

That won't work well with external programs, you'll need to unpack those files each time if you e.g. want to view all related files in an image browser. I would suggest to create a folder for each project even if there is only one file.

That's correct if the files are co-dependent - if they are just individual documents / images etc. there should be no problem, if you can live with the prompt for when to delete the temporary file

Thanks for all the comments.
At the momment the best option is to use FreeCommaner even if I do not feel confortable with it (I have been using TC in the last 20 years or so).
