Now I have also implemented saving of all tabs in a tab header, and two loading methods:
- method 1 simply appends the loaded tabs to the end of the open tabs
- method 2 replaces the open tabs with the loaded tabs

nice idea that thingy w/ the tabs
one more suggestion to that...
what about displaying 3 windows instead of only 2.
would make life much easier if you have to compare
different versions of files stored in different folders.
the main working principle should not be altered.
that means only 2 windows r involved by any action.
to make clear which windows r the active window u can
use a color code.
dark blue=primariy active window (the one where u'r working w/
light blue=secondary active window (target window)
somewhat grey=third window (not involved by any action untill u klick on it to make it acitve, means that the light blue window will become the inactive, grey window)

p.s. mr. ghisler... TC is the greatest file manager i've ever seen, just mho. thx 4 the fast response and delivery of the licence i bought online. of course 4 the surface mail w/ the lil booklet too

Unfortunately you would lose many advantages of a 2 panel file manager. That's why I'm adding tabs now - this way you have more than 2 directories at the same time, but always a defined source and target.what about displaying 3 windows instead of only 2.

s@h,
If you really need this specific feature, I guess for now it would be best if you opened another instance and arranged them so that you see three panels.

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.
I just experimented with SpeedCommander's approach to tabs and I liked it very much!!!.
SpeedCommander places two rows of tabs underneath the file panels.
One row shows the tabs for each panel.
The second row has tabs for tab groups as well as "file panel"s similar to the temp drive plug-in for TC.
The implication here is: multiple tabs per panel, as well as multiple "temporary" or virtual file lists per panel.
The Speed Commander implementation is wonderful to use and I hope that TC's tabs behave similarly.

I use NetCaptor which uses the following:
Ctrl+TAB, Ctrl+Shift+TAB (as mentioned above)
Ctrl+N - Open New
Ctrl+W - Close (Window)
It also has a Tabs item on the menu to list all of the tabs.

Now some more questions:
Should I use Shift+Enter too to open a dir in a separate tab? This could only work for dirs, because it already has a special meaning for archives (open in associated packer).
Why not use Ctrl+Enter for this? It keeps the shortcut inline with all of the others and Ctrl+Enter currently does nothing for dirs (that I am aware of).

What exactly should happen when the user presses Ctrl+T? There are several possibilities:
1. A new tab is created with the same path as the current, but the current tab remains active
2. As 1, but the new tab becomes active
3. A new tab is created with the same path as the current, the tab is activated and the cursor is put in the address field.
Why not make this a user configurable option?
I use NetCaptor and it lets you select the behavior for new tabs (including where they open in the order of the tabs).

Wow! I went to the site and had a quick look. It almost looks like it might be better than TC (dare I say that?). Have you used this? If so, what is your opinion?Well, I think this Frigate screenshot says it all. Of course I'd hide the "tabs" themselves, I really hope it would be possible

Better looking interface, but less possibilities (compared to what plugins give to TC), slower, bigger (the lite version setup is 4.67 MB) , less configurable and too unstable compared to TC.

This pretty much sums up most of the competitors.Better looking interface, but less possibilities (compared to what plugins give to TC), slower, bigger ... less configurable and too unstable compared to TC.
A few are more configurable, though: DOpus in particular.
