Wish: Separate editors for different filetypes

Post by *Gingo »

Something I've wanted for a while is the option of setting a specific editor for a specific filetype, so that my text editor doesn't pop up if I press F4 on (for example) a .wav or a .psd file.

This behaviour is already implemented by your Operation System ...

A Doubleclick by mouse or a simple ENTER keypress on a file will open the assigned program.

If this is not your specific editor, you should change the assignment.

Of course you can easily do it via TC "Files / Associate with..." ;-)

I think seperate editors for different filetypes would be a useful addition. Edit a *.lnk-file using your favorite *.lnk-editor by simple pressing F4 sounds good.

Oh well, we have Alt-F3 for the time being.

Not the same thing. It's still a single program. I agree that there should be filetype-based editor associations too. And no, pressing enter is not always the choice. For example, a .wav might be associated with a player or a .psd with a viewer, whereas editing might be a tool for a totally different program.

Observe that Windows already has "Open" and "Edit" as separate shell commands, even though they are often associated to the same program.

It is not the same, ie. I use ENTER or Doubleclick by mouse to open the file (ie. with player, viewer, etc.), this I wish to use for editing - small utility executing shell "edit" operation on file or new option which will do this in view/edit Configuration can be a solution.
Much more flexible seems to me the first suggestion, ie. associations for editors too - one can easily decide what to use (more ways is always better than a single one :) ).

Up to now I thought that the "Properties" dialog (Alt+Enter) is the only *.lnk-editor that I need. :? What's your favorite *.lnk-editor? What are its benefits?

What's your favorite *.lnk-editor?
I created a link editor myself.

I don't really like the standard link-properties dialog. That's why I created my own.

oblomov,

It is not. You can define different associations for Alt-F3, just look at the config page for Edit/View.

You're right, that works. Though it would feel slightly more intuitive to have this option on the F4 key, this works quite good.
