Comparing of non-binary files...

Post by *Leo »

Hi all,

Although "Total Commander" has very nice feature "Compare by Content" this is
not 100% of what sometimes I and perhaps other users need when comparing
non-binary files.

This is especially true when you do compare of some ".txt" and/or ".cfg"
and/or ".ini" files where even simple offset in one of the files involved
makes compare unusable.

I remember that in old (pre Win2000 and WinXP) days there was useful Norton
(Symantec) tool for file compare from "Norton Utilities" that did this compare
OK (it took into account that lines can be with offset and/or moved).

Unfortunately if you are using the Win2000 or WinXP this program is not
available to install.

So... can anyone please tell me if there are some other similar non-binary
file compare program that can do this with all "bells and whistles"?

Anyone knows of any commercial/shareware/freeware software that can do that?

Is there, perhaps, any "Total Commander" plug-in with that capability?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Leo,

there was a topic in the german TC forum some days ago. In this thread Wawuschel suggests the Shareware program BeyondCompare which integrates fine within the Start-menu of TC.

Wawuschel gives some steps to set up using BC with TC:
  • Menu 'Start, Change Start Menu
  • Button 'Add Item ...'
  • Enter path to BC2.exe in the command edit box
  • Paste %T%M %P%N to the parameter edit box
  • select a Shortcut key
To use the new start menu item, simply select a file or folder in each of the two panes and press your shortcut key.

HTH,
