TC will stop working if you change totalcmd.exe.

IIRC you can use custom icons if you disable: "Configuration" -> "Packer" -> "Treat archives like directories".
ok Ive done that, disable "treat archives like directories"
but dont know how to use a custom icon, other than the method I already tried above

Sorry - I have had a chance to chek it out now, and I didn't remember correct. At least I can't make that work either now.

hmm, resourcehacker?
No, but custom icon library - just replace archive icon in ICL file with yours and then install ICL via wincmd.ini.

But that just changes TC's icon for archives as such - still no option to show different icons for different archive types.

A custom library with a modified archive icon can be downloaded here: http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/totalcmd_icl.zip .

Agree. But currently it is the only way to change icon for internal archive types w/o changing behaviour.

At the moment I am making do with just having different coloured text label to help distinguish rar from zip.
I'ts a bit of a pity that something I can do in windows explorer cant be done in TC !

I can't even change internal association for RAR file type (to an external application or to another packer plugin type using **ext as associated program) - TC ignores it when I press Enter. BTW 'Open (TC)' item in context menu starts associated program or opens archive using packer defined for extension specified after **.

Try Shift+Enter - is works good when you have associated program.
