[SOLVED] [OT] Is there an Power user alternative to CMD.EXE?

Post by *yetanotherlogin »

Hello,

I'm sorry to post here, but since I'm a TC user and there must be plenty of power users here, I figured I'd get some valuable opinion.

If you use an alternative shell to the pathetic native CMD.EXE on Windows (7), what do you recommend?

Google returned the following:
ConEmu
Console
cmder Mini
PowerCmd
Clink

Thank you.

I strongly recommend Take Command.

Take Command started out as 4DOS in the early PC days in 1988 as a replacement for the MSDOS command interpreter. With the popularity of 4DOS constantly increasing, Symantec (Norton Commander) licensed it to resell it under the name NDOS. Later on 4DOS evolved to 4NT for Windows NT/2000/XP. Finally it became Take Command for Windows Vista/7/8/10.

A license free version is available called TCC/LE (Take Command Console/Limited Edition). It hasn't been updated since February 2016 due to tainting sales of the commercial product, but nevertheless it is a very powerful command shell replacement which leaves the competition far behind. Look out for TCC/LE and TCC/LE x64 on the JPSoftware download page.

Console is not really maintained anymore .
ConEmu is embedded inside cmder and used as console.

clink add completion and advanced line edition capability on top of cmd.exe.

I do not know PowerCmd.

None of the above are alternatives shell. MS Windows also provide powershell and you can really do a lot with it if you include some cmdlet and modules.

So cmder or conemu with poweshell is for me a good start, and you can even use them with cmd+clink.
