FTP timeout too early for my taste, is there a config?

Post by *nirmelamoud »

Hi,

my FTP connection is timeout too early for my taste, is there a hidden configuration to change that ,
im not talking about the upload/ download timeout, but about the idel timeout , the time that it will disconnect if no activity is running?

or does TC does not have a keep alive feature, and it depend on the FTP server timeout ?

and if thats the case, can I ask for a keep alive feature ?

thanks

If you don't enable keepalive the timeout depends on the FTP server you are connected to. To enable keepalive see the connection settings of your FTP connection, tab Advanced (Send command to keep connection alive).

Well, then try a different command. FTP servers may ignore certain commands like NOOP.

Set time interval less than 60 s, if sending other command doesn't help.

If the server has Anti-Keep-Alive protection, you can try the command LIST instead of NOOP. You need to enter it manually.

I looked at the ftp log file, but its hard to know since it does not have timestamps on the comands, is this can be added ?
so I can see when it went offline, compared to the last commands of the keep alive ?
compared to when we started the session ?

Maybe it's the case with limited number of connections? The server may automatically close a connection when you open another one.

Well, finding out the timeout is really easy, even without having timestamps in a log. Just connect to the server, wait 10 seconds, then change to another directory, wait 20 seconds and so on. Keep doing that with increasing time intervals (e.g. plus 10 seconds) until the connection is dropped. Remember that TC caches FTP directory contents, so changing dirs visited before won't work.

But, when you say, it's your FTP server: Why don't you just look in its settings for the timeout value?

because its on my router, they do not expose that info, I need to dig into itsb logs to see if I Can see it there
not sure its that easy since it will take a lot of time to play with X sec interval, my guess is that it will be 15 min (common timeout I think) but im not sure it will help me in anyway

Why don't you check your FTP server docs?
How old is your ftp server software? To prevent deny of service attacks modern software uses shorter timeouts and less number of connections by default.
Do you login to the server as a registered user or use anonymous login? Anonymous users may also get shorter timeouts and less connections by default for the same security reasons.
