Trouble opening excel file

Post by *robbie.dembo » 2019-01-14, 21:00 UTC

I recently downloaded TC on a new laptop. I am a novice user, so apologies if this is a basic question. When trying to open an excel file, TC is treating the file as a directory, and opens to a set of sub-directories, which are called: _rels, docProps, xl. I don't know what these are. The file itself doesn't open. This isn't happening with word documents or pdfs, which open fine. This is happening regardless of whether I press "Enter" or double click to open the file.

Actually TC opens the *.xlsx file as an archive (which it really is).

Use the top level context menu to open the file.

I changed the "Associate with" to "Excel()" but now I get an error saying Microsoft Office doesn't recognize the command. Is there a different association I should be using?

Which Office version do you use?

And try to use your OS to associate .xlsx to your excel.exe

Me guess you use win10?

Use Microsoft 365, whatever came on the laptop. Still not getting this to work, hoping for suggestions!

What have you tested till now?
Do you have a "Office" folder on your PC, and an Excel.exe?

I uninstalled MS Office and reinstalled it and it seems to be working now! Sometimes the easiest solution is best

Nice to heat that you could fix it! I'm getting quite a few reports about broken Excel file associations - they work in Explorer, but don't work with Windows functions like ShellExecuteEx which I have to use to open files.

Another solution would be to define an association just for Total Commander:

1. Choose files - internal assocuations - Add
2. Type the extensions which you want to associate, e.g.
*.xlsx
3. Click on "Confirm"
4. In the line "Open with", click on ">>"
5. Choose the editor (e.g. Excel.exe)
