Lister, IrfanView, and HEIC

Post by *soreno »

I use IrfanView with lister. All relevant multimedia files display perfectly.
Execpt HEIC files. The HEIC files can be displayed fine if I open "i_view32.exe" directly.
However, if I use lister, then the HEIC will not display.

What steps are needed to make HEIC work with lister ?

In der Annahme, dass IrfanView im TC konfiguriert ist, gilt das folgende aus der Hilfe:

IviewAdditionalTypes= Additional file types which should be passed to Irfanview/Xnview for conversion
Example: *.xyz *.abc
If an already supported type is listed here, e.g. *.tif, then the file isn't also detected by content.
The following file types are sent to Irfanview/Xnview even without this option:
jfif, tga, tif, tiff, pcx, ani, acr, cam, clp, cpt, cur, dcx, dib, eps, g3, iff, img, lbm, lwf, pbm, pgm, pcd, ppm, psd, psp, ps, ras, rle, sfw, iw44, djvu, rgb, dcm, acr, wbmp, mos, kdc, xbm, xpm, swf, fpx, sgi, jp2, j2k

Good point about the manual..
I've added that property to my [lister] section: https://imgur.com/a/tb6cDwM

However, I'm still seeing HEIC files as binary instead of the actual image.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong ?

I can confirm the problem, tested with some downloaded example file and the actual IrfanView.
Lets wait if Christian or someone else can say anything about that.

tested with some downloaded example file
Can you provide a link to such a file - I only have one .heic file and that one cannot be opened with IrfanView (Error - can't decode input file).

I downloaded the examples from:

Does Irfanview itself display heic files? As I understand it, they require a plugin.

Yes, IrfanView (i_view32.exe) displays the file.

However, I have installed the free Microsoft HEIF image extension:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/heif-image-extensions/9pmmsr1cgpwg?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

Not sure if IrfanView uses this extension. Probably does..

Example HEIC file:

This gets complicated really quick.
I tried the XnView path and had no success despite the download and adding the Heic (really called Heif) plug-in.
Could not open file listed as 1) below, even after changing properties to XnView rather than PhotoViewer.

Went for Windows support (Win10) and installed https://www.copytrans.net/copytransheic/CopyTransHEICforWindowsv1.004.exe.
This made my Win10 PhotoViewer display .heic files as expected using these 3 samples:

1) https://nokiatech.github.io/heif/content/images/autumn_1440x960.heic
2) https://winaero.com/blog/heif-heic-images-windows-10/ and using this link ( aboue post) https://1drv.ms/u/s!AuKNsLlK8k5jih-WGHX1J0UnOffb
3) https://github.com/liuziangexit/HEIF-Utility-Native-DLL/blob/master/Examples/1.HEIC

Back to XnView and it so happens that 2) and 3) above samples open perfectly fine in XnView, whereas 1) will not.
Apparently there are 2 different .heic formats (probably many more aside from the .heic and the .heif). The nokiatech is different, and I have
noticed references to Nokia format vs iPhone format being different.
Comparing file headers in HexEditor shows that 2) & 3) have very similar header formats - 1) being significant different.

We are talking about IrfanView and not XnView !
IrfanView has no problems to display .heic files.

Everything - Version 1.4.1.939 (x64) can preview .HEIC files too:

ext:heic
autumn_1440x960.heic
random_collection_1440x960.heic

--> Menu "View" - "Preview STRG+Q" <--

Ja, das kann Everything, weil Windows und auch der Windows Photoviewer solche Dateien seit einiger Zeit verstehen.
Everything Preview kann Preview für alles was der Explorer auch im Preview kann.

Well I'm not using Everything.

I just installed the most recent I_view and it will not open .heic files.
The image listed by soreno is in DropBox; but comes downloaded as .jpeg - that opens just fine.
Not sure if that's due to DropBox support of .heic files; but if you right-click the image you get the .jpeg file.
Using the Download in top of the page you get .heic file - no opening.

The URL I gave in my post above gives you many real .heic files to download with no conversions in between.
https://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=32568#p129428
And the actual IrfanView (4.52) with its default plugins has no problem to display them
and also shows you under Image / Information what type of file you have.

Hmm, I tried the samples from https://winaero.com/blog/heif-heic-images-windows-10/ and I still get the same error in IrfanView (4.52 32 and 64 bit with all plugins installed) -this is under Windows 7.

Then I tried with IrfanView 4.52 under Windows 10 - that just opened a black window.

Then I installed the "HEIF Image extensions": https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/heif-image-extensions/9pmmsr1cgpwg - but I still couldn't view .heic files in neither IrfanView nor Windows Photos (Metro app) or Windows Photo viewer.

Then I also installed the "HEVC Video Extensions": https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/hevc-video-extensions-from-device-manufacturer/9n4wgh0z6vhq - as advised severel places ( https://www.windowscentral.com/how-open-heic-and-hevc-files-windows-10s-photos-app , https://www.thewindowsclub.com/view-heic-hevc-files-windows-photos-app )

And now I can see .heic files in both IrfanView, Windows Photos and Windows Photo Viever.

So I guess there is no way of displaying .heic files under Windows 7 without converting them first...?

EDIT:
The "CopyTrans HEIC for Windows" program: https://www.copytrans.net/copytransheic/ enables viewing of HEIC files under Windows 7 in IrfanView and Windows Photo Viewer :)

For XnView under Windows 7 & 10 I had to install a HEIF plugin: https://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?p=146764#p146764

Under Windows 7 (with "CopyTrans HEIC" installed) and [Lister]IviewAdditionalTypes= *.heic in wincmd.ini (remember to restart TC after editing the ini file) I can also view heic files in Lister, but I cannot view heic files in Lister under Windows 10 with only the HEIF and HEVC extensions installed.

If I install "CopyTrans HEIC for Windows" under Windows 10 I can also view heic files in Lister by use of IrfanView under Windows 10.
I thereafter had to reinstall the "HEIF Image extensions" to be able to view heic files in Windows Photos (Metro app), but after that the "HEIF Image extensions" and "CopyTrans HEIC for Windows" seems to coexist fine.

EDIT 2:
The latest version 0.10.3 Beta of PhotoViewer ( https://totalcmd.net/plugring/photoviewer.html ) from 15th of April 2019 can also show heic files, and contrary to IrfanView in Lister the PhotoViewer plugin does not require "CopyTrans HEIC for Windows" to be installed under Windows 10 - the two Microsoft codecs for HEIF and HEVC are enough
