Accessing Linux files (WSL) from Windows

Post by *tungwaiyip »

I have installed Windows Linux Subsystem (WSL). I'm super excited to have a fully functional Linux subsystem running in Windows. I can even access Linux files from Windows. It works almost everywhere simply by using the UNC name \\wsl$\{distro name}\.

https://devblogs.microsoft.com/commandline/whats-new-for-wsl-in-windows-10-version-1903/

That is except Total Commander. It hangs whenever I tried to use it from TC??? (I have version 8.5).

WSL is a game changer. It can make Windows to be the developers platform of choice again. Please please, we need Total Commander to work there.

This is an old thread about this. From what I understand, WSL and file access is way more functional in 2019 than back then.

Does it work with TC 9.50 beta? It has partial support for case senstitive names.

If not, please provide step by step instructions how to cause a hang.

I have installed 9.22a 64 bit. Previously I have the 8.5 32 bit. Now it works perfectly. I'm extremely happy with WSL and TC.

I have now installed WSL and then Ubuntu from the MS store on Windows 10 1909. It works perfectly with both TC 32-bit and 64-bit, with command
cd \\wsl$\Ubuntu

Maybe it depends on the Linux distribution you use? Could you tell me which one you have?

I have installed WSL 2 and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS from the MS Appstore on Windows 10 1909. It works over the command line. But it fails over the change directory menu (ctrl + d).

Strange, Ctrl+D works fine here too. Did you add it by going there via cd command and then Ctrl+D - Add current directory?

Or did you add it manually? I ask because some subfolders may be case sensitive there, so you best go there and then add it via Ctrl+D to ensure the correct spelling.
