Why not change the modification date of the photos to the EXIF date? That's what I do. If you have the EXIF plugin installed, you can do it like this:
1. Choose Files - Change attributes
2. Click on "More attributes"
3. Choose tc - writedate
4. As value, enter [=exif.Date] [=exif.Time]
5. If you want, you can save that now with F2 for the future (optional)
6. Apply with OK

Note that this is one particular case. Users need to sort according to various criteria, e.g. image dimensions or GPS coordinate or used codec or any other, not only EXIF, but any other available in custom columns.
What are they supposed to do then? Also change the date? Or name if data can't be interpreted as date?

Thanks, I'll try that - it solves the problem for my use-case.
