is there a way to run tc under linux?

Post by *giulia »

Hi

almost every file manager ,or even soom tool like fastcopy and maybe extreme copy are the most fast file copy

but are just a bit faster then windows or total commander

I guess it's windows , with antivirus turned off

I have no experience with macos , even i can use my bf's imac and macbook pro
i haven't tried macos to copy files to ntfs volume because I guess they can corrupt windows file system

but I have used some image software based on linux (like acronis true image , or image for linux ) to back up my operation system and they are incredible fast , they take 2 minutes to create an image and restore , the same program under windows take around 10 - 14 minutes

so i have used a spartan file manager (nothing to compare to total commander ) and a nice one Krusader to copy lots of file , and it was really very fast !

so I tought is there a way to run tc under linux and obtain the advantage of linux

Have you make some benchmark between coping files with windows file explorer , total commander and fastcopy vs macos vs linux ?
or speed is not everything ,but when you need to copy, backup 30GB , 2 minutes vs 10-14 , well make a difference

is there a way to run tc under linux or a small linix distro without wine (because i don't have linux installed ,i'm thinking to run it under a distro like puppy linux distro or another small size distro to boot via usb stick ?

thanks
love Total Commander , best file manager ever made

TC is a Windows-only application, it can't run under Linux w/o a Windows emulator like WINE.

Although giulia asked how to do it without Wine, there's no way to do so, as MVV already pointed out. Windows programs need some kind of API/ABI layer or even an emulator to run on Linux (or MacOS or any other OS really).

BTW, Wine is not an emulator, it's an ABI (application binary interface) layer which translates Windows API calls to Linux/POSIX system calls.

Dalai,
Not sure why you're directing this at me, but yes, you are right in all points.

I had the impression that you intended to correct pplupo's answer as being not (right) the way giulia wanted things to do. Anyway, I think the point about Wine is clear to everyone now, so we can leave it at that.

You are absolutely correct. It was my mistake, I guess after reading the answers I forgot about the OP's requirement. My bad.

One more question on running TC in Wine. The root folder is always displayed in TC as Z:\. Is it possible to change this drive letter? Or is it hardcoded in Wine?

Run winecfg to configure Wine and its environment, including audio, drive letters, Windows version and so on.

Hi, folks.

Just a quick status update on the advocator of running Total Commander on Linux Mint through Wine in that thread, Installation of Total Commander in Wine, mentioned above by Hacker:
The guy is still doing it, running Total Commander on Linux through Wine, for the past 11 years now.

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Sx3

Total Commander Version 10.00 64-bit (2021-06-10)
(Had to type what Help => About Total Commander displays, because "totalcmd64 --version" still does not work.)

The reason for clinging to T.C. on Linux, too, is simple and no surprise:
No other (genuine Linux) file-manager offers so many useful features, which I use daily and without which my work would be much less convenient.

On MX Linux 19.4, I am giving Double Commander a serious try (no Wine, no T.C.). D.C. has come a long way. I really admire the D.C. developer Alexx2000 for his perseverence. D.C. has come pretty close to Total Commander. Yet, it is still, 0.9.10 beta. So it is not 100% feature complete, yet.
But if there is any genuine Linux alternative to T.C. through Wine, then I am confident it will be Double Commander. Really looking forward to see version 1.0 some day in the (near?) future. Careful though with the scheduled release dates, they have a tendency of being moving targets.

Cheers,
Karl

P.S.:
A question, not that the answer is really relevant, just out of curiosity: is it still possible to run Total Commander on ... what was its name ... on Windows?

Update on my statement:
karlchen wrote: 2021-06-19, 12:24 UTCOn MX Linux 19.4,[...] (no Wine, no T.C.).
Since, yesterday this is only half true. On one of my 2 MX Linux 19.4 systems, Wine 4.0 and Total Commander 10.00 64-bit+32-bit have been installed.
One more clear "yes, there is" as an answer to the question asked in the thread title "Is there a way to run TC under Linux?" :D
