Configuration->Options->Color->Define Colors by file type is meant for the foreground (text) color, and it isn't suited for coloring all files in a certain folder.

Instead, you should change the background color and/or tab header color. This can be done via
Configuration->Options->View mode. For example, create a view mode "Red" and choose appropriate colors from the dropdown comboboxes for tab color and backgrounds.
Then go to the setting page "Auto mode change" and add a new rule. You should use rule
+: Must match

If you set the directory to
C:\Path\*
it will match the directory and all subdirectories, while
C:\Path\
will only apply the color in that specific directory.

hi
I have found this tutorial , works but i can not believe it's the only way

it should be a easy way to do it

TC 8.5

Step 1

Open the File search, alt-f7
Go to the advanced tab, tick attributes
Select directories only
Go to the Load/Save tab, save the search, say 'folders'

Step 2

Configuration, Color
Define colors by Type
Add new, Add, folders (or the name you gave it)
Pick a color, OK

Done

I am a in doubt if it is the folder name k:\Totalcmd 10 you want in red or if it is the background of the file panel, once you are inside the k:\Totalcmd 10 you want in red folder??? - your latest post is about the folder name, your second post is about file panel background.

https://i.imgur.com/sgiNHaW.png should work for the background, but the first two rules, which are blurred out in your screenshot, might also apply to the k:\Totalcmd 10 folder - try to move the +k:\Totalcmd 10\ rule to the top before the two other rules.

The best way of marking folders is to assign custom icons to them (either manually or using third-party software). By the way, TC always displays custom icons in tab titles.

No, it doesn't. It is just a default value for "Show icons on tabs" option which can be changed in TC Options > Folder Tabs.
