Upgrade from TC8 -> TC10

Post by *PET »

Hey guys,

it seems that I wanted so long to upgrade to TC9 that ... TC10 was released :D

Even that so far TC8 still serves me pretty fine, especially since I have spent a lot of time configuring it, I think it might be time for an upgrade.

What are the most exciting features in TC9 & TC10?
Have the old plugins been updated to TC10?

Thanks,
PET

It is not just two versions from TC 8 to TC 10 - it is at least 9 versions (9.00, 9.10, 9.12, 9.20, 9.21, 9.22, 9.50, 9.51 and 10.00) + some a-versions, so there are really a lot of changes, and which changes a user finds exiting is individual - but here are some of the major changes of not so technical character - so most users will recognize these:

User interface:
- View modes, can be switched manually via menu "Show", or automatically by rules (9.00)
- Vertical button bar (can be disabled via Configuration - Options - Layout) (9.00)
- Show up to 3 external devices without drive letter (e.g. Android or Windows Phone) in Alt+F1/F2 drive dropdown list (9.00)
- Rubber band selection mode when using left mouse button selection, disable via settings (9.00)
- Support for multiple screens with different DPI per screen on Windows 10 (9.10)
- Multi-monitor: allow users to save position separately on each screen. (9.20)
- Dark mode on Windows XP and newer - Menu item "Dark<->Normal" in menu "Configure"(9.50)
- Show up to 3 connected USB devices without drive letter (e.g. phones, tablets) also in drive buttonbar (9.50)
- Zoom thumbnails with Ctrl+Mouse wheel between 10% and 200% of the size (10.00)
- Save displayed file types separately for each tab (10.00)

Lister:
- Define which view method and plugin should be used when opened, separately by file type (9.50)
- Press '8' to show preview as the Explorer (uses IPreviewHandler or IThumbnailProvider if the former isn't available) (9.50)
- New DirectShow media player in Lister, replacing the old one based on Video for Windows (10.00)

Search:
- Use "Everything" tool for much faster search on NTFS drives, also on network shares if possible (9.00)
- Search with content plugins for text on main search page (9.00)
- Regular expressions supported in more types: Unicode UTF-8+UTF-16, Office XML (9.00)
- Internal regular expression library updated to latest version (faster, more functions) (10.00)

Synchronize dirs:
- Allow to use regular expressions and saved searches, with options where to apply them, e.g. one side, both sides, etc. via button [1x] (10.00)
- New context menu items to show file context menu and file properties, and to edit left/right file (10.00)

Compare by content:
- Show only differences, with additional lines above/below the differences, including editing (9.00)

FTP:
- Transfer from FTP server to FTP server with F5: Option to copy via local PC (9.50)

Other operations:
- Automatic update check (9.00)

Have the old plugins been updated to TC10?
They don't need to, all plugins should still work in TC 10, if they are the right bitness (32bit or 64bit).

You can find most, but not all, plugins at https://totalcmd.net

You can also find a selection of plugins at: https://www.ghisler.com/plugins.htm

One more thing. Is there any way to move my FTP servers from TC8 to TC10?

PET,
Make sure you keep your wcx_ftp.ini.

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.
