File Renaming

Post by *bobb06810 »

I try to rename a file (either using right mouse key, or shift-F6).

Field opens to allow editing. But when you hit Enter, the original name returns. The file is not renamed.

Why?

1. What’s the name of the file?

2. Is it a network available file?

3. Do you have admin rights on the file?

4. Is it a file in use by an already running (even transparent to you) application by any chance ?

Oh, by the way there is a 3rd way of renaming a filename and that is by pressing the left mouse button over the file for more than a second or so! Just for the record coz I’m certain that it has nothing to do with your problem. ;-)

It's any and all files (exe, jpg, txt, etc.).

After retyping into the name field, the renaming just won't stick. It returns to the original name upon hitting Enter.

Use Windows explorer on the same file(s), works fine.

Hmmm, there must be something corrupted in your TC if I may speculate. Try to uninstall it completely (even the ini files) and re-install it from scratch.

Does the file contain accented characters, or letters from a different codepage?

No, it happens with ALL files.

If it helps, the totalcmd.exe is 676kb, ver 5.51

Just a hit in the dark :

Renaming works only if finally the ENTER or RETURN key is pressed !

Slightly different behaviour from explorer but even more secure if focus got lost during entry ...

I reinstalled.

Renaming seems to work.

Thanks.
