pdfview plugin could not find ghostview

Post by *butforwales »

I newly installed pdfview.wlx and Ghostscript 9.53.1 64-bit from Artifex.
When I tried to use the lister it warned "Could not load Ghostview environment!".
I still need GhostView but it is nowhere to be found.
I happen to deal with a lot of pdf files these days can really benefit from open a pdf in lister. Thanks!

I can't help you with respect to this particular plug-in.
But unless you really need functionality specific to pdfview, you might try alternative plug-ins.

For example, i personally use the slister plug-in (https://totalcmd.net/plugring/slister.html) in conjunction with SumatraPDF (https://www.sumatrapdfreader.org/). Both of course in x64. Just adjust slister's INI file (slister.ini) to point to the SumatraPDF executable, and off you go. Not sure if there are better PDF viewer lister plug-ins, but slister does what i want/need, so ymmv... :)

(When trying different plug-ins, keep in mind that having a popular PDF viewer NOT integrated in the plug-in is almost always an advantage, as you have better chances of benefitting from possible features/fixes of newer PDF viewer versions than waiting for a plug-in author to rebuild their plug-in with updated PDF code.)

Moderators, please move this topic over to the plug-in sub forum. Thanks! :)

elgonzo thank you for the information. I will give slister a try! My particular need is always taking a peek inside the pdf to see what it's about. I rarely need to edit or comment on them. And when I do I turn to my trusted CutePDF.

Moderator message from: Hacker

Moved to the Plugins forum.
Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

Same Problem here.
I found out, that the PlugIn does not support the newest Ghostscript.
Switch back to GhostScript 9.23 and it will work again!
The last update for the PlugIn is from 2016. Maybe we can ask the author to update pdfview to work with the newest version of GhostSkript!?

Try to add path with gswin32c.exe and gsdll32.dll to PATH.

Pdfview is in no way better than SLister with actual SumatraPDF.
So there is no real reason for Ghostscript.

Also PDFView supports PostScript (*.ps) and Encapsulated PostScript (*.eps), it might be important.

sLister (i.e. SumatraPDF) can show these formats too, but GhostScript required too :) PATH modification is idea from sLister theme.

For me this formats are handled with ULister without the need for Gostscript.

the configuration method is mentioned in ReadMe.txt in the wlx_pdfview folder.
just add a line in lsplugin.ini (which is stored in the same folder as your wincmd.ini) will resolve the issue.
In my env it will be: exepath="C:\Program Files\gs\gs10.02.1\bin\gswin64c.exe"

tested with "pdfview.wlx v.1.09 (32+64 bit)" and "Ghostscript 10.02.1 for Windows (64 bit) Ghostscript AGPL Release"
